COMP 1-2 ARGUMENTATIVE PROF. KENNEDY Directions: Refer to the ethos, pathos, logos chart and example essay; then answer below. 1. What is the thesis? Despite what many may believe about the widespread theory of the global warming issue, the hoax of the “damaging,” increasing temperatures on earth by man is simply just a tale. 2. How did the author introduce the topic? (Questioning? Brief Background on topic? Etc.) The author introduces the topic by highlighting the controversial nature of global warming in today's world and the opposing views on the subject. The author also suggests the need to reach a consensus on this issue. 3. Identify one body paragraph in the essay (1,2,3 etc). Then explain how the author supported it. Pathos? (anecdotal evidence, true current events?) Logos? (data, study outcomes, charts, etc?) A body paragraph 1 begins with "To begin with, fluctuations of air temperature..." In this paragraph, the author supports the thesis by providing historical temperature fluctuations as evidence. The support is largely based on logos, as the author references historical temperature data and trends.

Identify a counterclaim (the opposing argument). Then explain how the author countered the opposition. A counterclaim in the essay is that global warming is real and has significant consequences, such as melting glaciers and rising sea levels. The author counters this opposition by arguing that the evidence presented by scientists is selective and that there are parts of the world getting cooler, which contradicts the idea of overall warming. This counterargument primarily relies on logos. 5. Does the author implement all 3 of Aristotle’s appeals for a well-rounded argument? Explain. The author employs all three of Aristotle's appeals for a well-rounded argument: Pathos: The author uses emotional language to suggest that the idea of global warming is a "hoax" and that people are being misled by manipulative forces. Logos: The author presents historical data and scientific evidence to support the argument against global warming.

KENNEDY Ethos: The author references a former Greenpeace director and other sources to establish credibility and suggest that even insiders doubt the authenticity of the global warming narrative. 6. Overall, does the author support his thesis? This is despite whether or not you agree. This is about examining if the author uses research and evidence for an essay that develops the thesis. Explain. The essay does support the author's thesis that global warming is a myth. However, the support is based on selective use of data and arguments that challenge the credibility of the opposing side. While the author presents evidence and counterarguments, it is important to note that the essay seems to rely on a skeptical perspective and does not extensively consider the overwhelming consensus in the scientific community about the reality of global warming. The argument may appear biased and may not convince readers who are already aware of the extensive research supporting the existence of global warming.
