It would be ideal to provide an introduction to coding in public schools for children to understand the importance of coding and how it affects everyday life. I was never provided this opportunity and only heard of coding from people in IT and when I was employed by IBM. However, I didn't understand the full impact and benefit of coding. Being able to create a simple graphic or visual tool to showcase my ideas would have been so impactful in my career, and rewarding. Children should be provided with the basic skills where they can understand the value of coding and computer systems in general. Then they can make an informed decision whether they would like to pursue this skill for their daily use and benefit. The lack of programming skills affect us all as we are dependant on the those with these skill sets to respond and support our daily work issues when things go wrong. An example is submitting a "help desk ticket" and waiting for a colleague to respond and resolve the issue. There is such an impact to productivity, morale and having to find the time to catch up. Coding would enable us to be more independent in our approach to problem solving and being more efficient and effective in our careers and home life. We would have a greater sense of independence and empowerment and the sense of accomplishment that we would feel as a result of our efforts.
