Assessment 1: Essay 50%
Due
Thursday 4th January 2024
Part 1: Annotated Scope & Sequence document (10 marks).
Download the Word format of the HASS Years 3-6 scope and sequence document attached.
Using 'track changes', annotate comments across the HASS curriculum document showing
where there are
opportunities
and
limitations
for integrating knowledge and understandings
of diverse communities, particularly Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, knowledge
and understandings.
Part 2: Analytical Essay Response (40 marks).
Word count:
2000 words (+/- 10%). This includes all text (headings, in-text citations,
captions and direct quotes). It excludes the Reference List.
Select one year level in the primary HASS curriculum to focus your response. Make
this clear which year level you are focusing on in your introduction.
Critically analyse the HASS curriculum for
opportunities
and
limitations
for
integrating knowledge and understandings of diverse communities, particularly
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, knowledge and understandings.
Use the areas identified in part 1 to elaborate on, and you must consider all disciplines
in HASS.
Suggest recommendations for how your ideas could be integrated across other subject
areas of the curriculum.
Use unit literature to support your work (
minimum of 4 academic references).
Q - What does 'Diverse Communities' mean?
A - Diverse communities relates to other cultures/communities. This will often mean other
cultures, religions and perhaps remote communities mentioned in the scope and sequence.
Q - Do I need to make a comment on every section of the Scope and Sequence?
A - No - you need to make a range of comments across the document (on all strands and sub-
strands) but you only need to comment on what is relevant to the topic. Some CD's are not
really related to the A1 topic and can be left blank.
Q - Do I need to use references in Part 1?
A - No - you can use your references in Part 2 to support your essay discussion. Part 1 can be
your own analytical thinking.
Q - I feel like I am being very repetitive in my Part 1 comments - is this okay?
A - Yes - often a comment can be copied and pasted to match multiple Content Descriptors.
This is fine, as long as you are applying critical and creative thought across the document and
there are a range of different ideas.
Q - I am confused as to which year levels I need to focus on in each part.
A - Part 1 covers Years 3-6. In Part 2 you need to choose a single year level (3, 4, 5 or 6) to
discuss.
Q - Do I need to discuss every annotation I made in Part 1 for my chosen year level within
my essay?
A - No - you may choose which examples will support your discussion.
Q - Which version of the curriculum should I be using?
A - For this assessment, it will be easier if you stick to Version 9.0 of the Australian
Curriculum. In A2 you can utilise your own state curriculum if you choose.
Q - Do I discuss pedagogies somewhere in my essay?
A - Yes! You can mention relevant pedagogies for the A1 topic in your essay. You might
discuss pedagogies that have been included in Topics 1-4 if relevant to the A1 topic of
integrating knowledges and understandings of diverse communities. It is up to you where you
include these.
