Research Questions & Gap/Purpose
○
List and/or update your research questions. If these research questions have
changed, or you have a new area of focus, describe these changes and your
aims/goals for pursuing these new lines of inquiry.
Initial Question:
To what extent has the implementation of Video Assistant
Referees in soccer impacted the game?
Updated Question:
To what extent has the implementation of Video Assistant
Referees (VAR) in soccer impacted the game and the soccer community?
The new area of focus that I have introduced into the research question is the
impact on the soccer community due to the introduction and use of Video
Assistant Referees. By referring to “community”, I will be exploring the impact of
VAR on the fans, players, and managers through the use of information and data
from popular and scholarly sources.
○
What is compelling to you about your topic and research questions? How do they
connect to your own communities, identities, interests? What do you already know
and how do you feel about this topic? What do you believe, think, feel in relation to
this topic yourself? Where do these questions come from, or what inspired them
(recent events included)? Why it might be important both to ask and answer them?
The topic I have chosen is compelling as the topic aligns with my passion for
soccer. I have been watching and playing soccer since I was in Grade 3 therefore
I have sufficient prior knowledge and interest to explore the topic. Consequently, I
have been watching matches from the time of the implementation of Video
Assistant Referees (in the 2018 World Cup) till now (English Premier League
games every weekend). The question framed comes from this passion for soccer
and I believe I have ample knowledge about the working of this technology.
Through this investigation, I am eager to expand my knowledge about Video
Assistant Referees (VAR) and their impact on both the game and the community.
I believe it is important to ask and answer this question as it will provide a
detailed account and amalgamate information from several sources to display the
modification caused by the introduction of VAR in soccer and the take of fans,
players, and managers. This will welcome manifold perspectives and make the
conversation multifaceted.
○
What's the state of the current public conversation surrounding this topic, according
to what you've found in your research thus far? What do people commonly think
about this topic, and/or what are some other opinions/positions on the issue or topic?
What information, input, or perspectives are missing and need to be included?
Who/what are they and why?
According to my research and prior knowledge, the soccer community deems the
introduction of Video Assistant Referees (VAR) negative due to in-game reasons.
The community largely questions the consistency of decisions made by VAR and
the large stoppages to check decisions causing increased game time. This
discussion is often fueled by controversial decisions made by the VAR week in
and week out, therefore, making this topic active and prominent in the
community. While these comments are being made towards VAR, I believe one
piece of information missing is data. These discussions often make use of visual
information such as images from VAR for offsides, handballs, etc., data is rather
relatively used. Therefore, I believe incorporating data would allow one to
objectively judge the decisions made by VAR rather than subjectively, hence
bringing in concrete evidence. In addition, while these opinions are largely
shared by fans, I believe it is also essential to take into the consideration
opinions of players and managers. The expertise of professional players and
managers is needed to be included in this conversation as these decisions are
dictating their performance and games. These perspectives would provide
credibility to the conversation therefore not only enhancing reliability but also
authenticity.

Genre Plan
○
What genre are you leaning toward for Project 3 (podcast, website/blog, or
presentation)? If you need a review of genres, see
9.8 Genre Analysis
.
The genre I am leaning toward for Project 3 is a
podcast
.
○
What experience do you have working with, reading/listening to, watching, and/or
creating this genre? Why are you interested in exploring or using it?
In terms of reading/listening/watching, I have watched several podcasts related
to soccer. Some formal ones include The Gary Neville Podcast, The 2 Robbies,
That Peter Crouch Podcasts, and more. Some informal ones (on YouTube)
include Fozcast, Pitch Side, and The Football Daily. All of these revolve around
weekly events taking place in various soccer leagues including manager
sackings, scores, VAR decisions, and more.
In terms of creating a podcast, I have worked with iMovie and Keynote to create
several projects during high school including videos and mini-documentaries.
Therefore, I have experience in the technical workings of editing and producing
videos.
I am interested in exploring this genre in particular as I am fond of watching
soccer related podcasts and videos. In addition, I have a passion for using tools
like Photoshop, iMovie, Keynote, and more to create media. Therefore, this
genre would be ideal to amalgamate my interest in soccer and digital media to
produce a podcast.
○
What do you think is/are the most interesting, useful, or meaningful genre
conventions (i.e. archetypal elements of a genre--the things you expect to see or be
done) of this medium?
●
Music and Audio Effects
○
I believe background music and audio effects are vital for a podcast to
ensure listener retention. In addition, background music is essential to set
a certain mood and tone for a podcast.
●
Interviews/Conversations with Externals
○
I believe it is important to include guest speakers in podcasts as it not only
sets a conversational tone but also brings in diverse perspectives which
can enrich the discussions.
●
Debates
○
I believe while having conversations with guest speakers, it would be ideal
to be ready with counterarguments to pointers they share as this would
add another layer to the discussion
●
Personal anecdotes
○
I believe including personal anecdotes in a podcast makes the information
being shared relatable to the audience. This in turn establishes a
connection with the audience despite no interaction.
○
How do you want to play around or mess with this genre (i.e. break and/or conform to
genre conventions) in order to make it your own or have it represent your "brand"?
One important way I want to play around or mess with this genre’s conventions is
by establishing a mix between an informal and formal tone. I would like to set an
informal tone while conversing with peers in order to bring in the relatability
aspect to connect with the audience. I believe value should be given to
relatability as I would not only like to share a great deal of information with my

intended audience but also ensure it is comprehensive which can be done by
making the content relatable.

Which of your
mentor texts
are most strongly guiding your thinking about your
Multimodal Inquiry? What qualities of those mentor texts do you plan on trying to
employ in the form your Project 3 will eventually take?
I believe the mentor text that most strongly guides my thinking about my
Multimodal Inquiry is “The Gary Neville Podcast”. This is due to the qualities the
podcast employs which include the initial formal tone and guest speakers. I
believe for my project, a formal tone would be essential while describing the
working of Video Assistant Referees (VAR) as it would establish credibility,
enhance clarity, and improve engagement. In addition, by inviting guest
speakers, I would be able to bring in more perspectives regarding the
introduction of VAR and its impact on soccer supporters and their take on the
technology.
3.
Audience Inventory
○
Who are the intended and possible audiences for this project? Identify all who apply:
self, friends, family, instructor, community, interest groups, university community,
public at large, digital or networked communities, or list those not mentioned here.
●
Primary Audience - Soccer supporters/fans and other members of the
soccer community
●
Secondary Audience - Football associations
○
What do you think they will already know and feel about your topic? What is the
emotional cast of your audience (e.g., impatient, irritated, supportive)? What do they
think, believe, and/or need to hear in relation to what you're researching? Why should
they care about your topic/issue?
In terms of the primary audience, I believe soccer supporters already have a
vague idea of the working of Video Assistant Referees due to the implementation
of the technology in several leagues across the world. In addition, soccer
supporters would be intrigued and supportive of what I am researching as it
provides them with a detailed account of objective and subjective information. I
believe they need to hear both sides of the argument (positive and negative
impact on the game) in order to justifiably establish a belief of their own regarding
this technology.
In terms of the secondary audience, I believe football associations have a good
idea about the working of Video Assistant Referees and a decent understanding
of the view of the soccer community. I believe they would be intrigued and eager
to see both sides of the argument (in favor and against the technology).
○
What would you like your audience to take from the conversation you and your
sources will create? How might this audience benefit from your findings and/or having
these questions answered?
From the conversation, I would like soccer supporters to establish a strong
opinion about their view on the introduction of Video Assistant Referees (VAR)
which is justified through not only empirical evidence but also statistical evidence.
This will benefit the audience as it will enhance their knowledge and support in
actions towards football associations about VAR. On the other hand, I would like
football associations to gather diverse perspectives regarding the use of VAR in
soccer and make use of the same while making decisions towards alterations of
its uses.
○
Why would the genre you listed above would be a good fit for an audience needing to
hear your perspective for your prospective topic and research questions? How will
you capture the attention of or connect with that audience through this genre?
I believe this genre is a good fit for the audience to hear my perspective due to its
conventions. Firstly, sharing personal anecdotes makes the information being
shared relatable to the audience which in turn establishes a connection with the
audience despite no interaction. Furthermore, Interviews/Conversations/Debates
with externals sets a conversational tone and bring in diverse perspectives which
can enrich and add a layer to the discussion. Lastly, Music and Audio Effects are
vital for a podcast to ensure listener retention. In addition, background music is
essential to set a certain mood and tone for the podcast.

Sources & Keywords
○
What sources do you have so far, and what have they helped you discover, realize, or
better understand?
Source 1: Carlos, Lago-Peñas, et al. “How Does Video Assistant Referee (VAR) Modify
the Game in Elite Soccer?” International Journal of Performance Analysis in Sport, vol.
19, no. 4, 2019, pp. 646–53, https://doi.org/10.1080/24748668.2019.1646521.
The source is vital for this discussion I am planning to create through my podcast
the source welcomes both benefits and drawbacks regarding the impact of Video
Assistant Referees on soccer. In addition, the authors make use of statistical
tools and analysis methods which support the claims for each benefit and
drawback mentioned in the source. Making use of this information and data in my
podcast would create a balance between subjectivity (opinions from peers) and
objectivity.
Source 2: Kolbinger, Otto, and Melanie Knopp. “Video Kills the sentiment—Exploring
Fans’ Reception of the Video Assistant Referee in the English Premier League Using
Twitter Data.” PloS One, vol. 15, no. 12, 2020, pp. e0242728–e0242728,
https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0242728.
The source is vital I am trying to develop for my project as by making use of data
analysis to understand fan sentiment, I will be able to share the rigorous and
evidence-based perspective on the use of VAR in football from the perspective of
the fanbase. In addition, this information would provide a concrete structure to
the podcast as it will be included in its section of the podcast. This section will act
as a transition between information regarding the working and application of
Video Assistant Referees (objectivity) and opinions from peers (subjective).
○
What kinds of sources do you still need? Whose voices are still missing? Why would
consulting their voices be important in answering your research questions and/or in
addressing the issue?
I still require scholarly and popular sources as I am missing voices of players and
managers themselves about the use of this technology. It is crucial to consider
the views of players and managers as well. Their professional expertise is
necessary to be incorporated into this discourse since the decisions made are
influencing their performance and matches. These viewpoints would lend
credence to the discussion, thereby not only enhancing its dependability but also
its authenticity.
