Should social media be used to hire, fire, or promote someone?
Should employers shave the right to use social media to determine if they should hire a new applicant, make decisions on promotions, or determine if they should let go of a current employee?
First employers shouldn't have the right to use social media to determine if they should hire a new applicant, make decisions on promotions, or to determine if they should let go of a current employee. Because social media screening is essentially looking into a job applicant's private life.
Additionally, snooping into a new applicant’s social media creates an unequal playing field and potentially provides hiring managers with information that can impact their hiring decision in a negative way. Snooping into a current employee’s social media creates an unequal playing field to maintain their current position and the chance of being fired or promoted.
Finally, employers shouldn't have the right to use social media to determine if they should hire a new applicant, to make decisions on promotions, or to determine if they should let go of a current employee because looking at anyone's social media can “reveal information about protected characteristics like age, race,
nationality, disabilities, gender, religion, etc. and that could bias your hiring decision” along with promotions or if they keep their job.
Thus, while if all your posts are appropriate on social media, then it could have a positive impact on getting or keeping a job,
employers shouldn't have the
