2 Unit 2 Assignment Alana Gamble Purdue University global CM 220 Professor Wink December 19, 2022
2 Unit 2 Assignment An example of persuasive communication in the personal context can be a simple a conversation with my husband to persuade him of my point of view on financial matters, or when those combine with our children. Although we are united, we also have different points of views. Using our conversations as the text, I would be the writer, my husband would be the audience. The Context in this case would be our children and finances. For the purpose of this persuasive communication would be to express my point of view towards a resolution. While still remaining objective, as he has an opinion as well that he may or may not agree with my own. This would be my example of a rival hypotheses. I use this example as we are both head strong in our opinions at times. In this conversation, we can both place our individual ideas out in the open. This is what leads us to a successful resolution. After all, our kids and our finances are
2 indeed a joint effort. Even in this personal setting, we use the 3 parts of intercultural inquiry as mentioned in the CM220, Unit 2 reading. We sought out the story behind the story. Where I have previous experience in certain parental aspects as he has with finances. We went through the rival hypotheses where he would counter my reasons with valid reasons of his own. We evaluated the options and outcomes to ultimately come up with a resolution (Comm Unit 2, Part 1, p2). Even in the work place, persuasive communication comes in many ways. I would say its most often used when trying to engage others to maintain performance goals, as the context. The audience would be my consultants. They are the whom I am trying to convince to simply do their best, even when I'm not watching which is also my purpose. I would need to get my message to in them using a team meeting in this case would be the text. The Comm Unit 2 states, “The goal of intercultural rhetoric is to bring forth all voices in the community, regardless of

2 education or training in persuasive communication, so that each has a place at the table in the effort to solve a problem. (Comm Unit 2, Part 1 P. 1). So, in order to solve our performance challenges as a team, we have to understand they why behind our what. While I have to understand what and where the teams' challenges lie, to help create small solutions to aim for the bigger picture. They best way to do this is listen to my team in a meeting format, so that their voices are heard. This way we can solve any issues that are preventing us from achieving our ultimate resolution; having great performance as a team (and individually). Academically, using persuasive communication would come in to view as being convinced to come back to school. I started college when my oldest was born, almost 17 years ago. There have been may things that I allowed to keep me from being successful in school. With this being my context, my company's purpose of helping career growth with the option of fully assisted education benefits. They used their advertisements as the text to
2 show me; their audience, how I could benefit from finishing the education I started. In this case my employer is the writer and this time I am the audience. There is a large audience that they are portraying to and of those, many thinking that the opportunity is too good to be true. I think that the company coming up with such a program for its employees after receiving extensive feedback on this same subject is the best example of the intercultural rhetoric. Persuasive communication is all around us. It's used in personal conversations, in the work place and academically.

You created strong examples of persuasive communication in the three contexts, and you took care to break down the rhetorical situation every time. Way to nail the analysis, too! With a smidge more formatting, I have no doubt that your upcoming projects will be even more awesome. 😊    Please see your drop box for my file with more feedback. Cheers –Prof. SW
