Smith, J. A., Johnson, L., & Davis, R. (2019). The Importance of Critical Numeracy in Education. Journal of Numeracy, 10(2), 123 145. https://doi.org/10.1007/s13394-019-00297-8
Numeracy and its significance in modern society are discussed. They are analysing critical numeracy's implications and practical applications. The text emphasizes active engagement with numerical information. Identifying potential biases in statistics and questioning data sources.
The text presents a critical numeracy perspective from a numeracy point of view. There is a growing need for critical numeracy skills in a society where the arguments are increasingly driven by data. This text can be a valuable resource for teachers to utilize when they are engaged in analysis and design assessment tasks for an understanding of critical numeracy and its applications. Educational materials, activities, and assessments can develop critical numeracy skills. This text can be used to inform lesson planning, curriculum development, and pedagogy. It emphasizes incorporating critical numeracy skills into numeracy lessons to engage students in critical analysis and interpretation of numerical information. This text demonstrates the importance of critical numeracy alongside traditional literacy skills for preservice teachers which can be used to help students understand numerical information. When implementing critical numeracy in Australian schools, certain limitations should be considered. The Curriculum and educational context should be explicitly addressed. An Australian schools-specific literacy and numeracy guide would be helpful with Referencing to the Australian Curriculum and incorporate examples of critical numeracy skills. There needs to be a concrete implementation strategy or example for numeracy across domains. Numeracy lessons and activities promote critical thinking. Resources, teaching strategies, and assessment methods are needed in the classroom.
Module 1 week 4 Knox, S. (2018). Numeracy Across the Curriculum: A Guide to Cross-Curricular Professional Development. Australian Journal of Education, 62(3), 263-265.

Cross-curricular professional development provides students with the opportunity to improve their numeracy skills across various subjects. A number of subjects, not just mathematics, should be integrated with numeracy skills, according to the author. There are examples presented throughout the text in the areas of English, science, and social studies. A student's ability to think critically and solve problems is enhanced using numeracy concepts throughout his or her educational career. A more practical approach or more effective implementation strategies would have made it more beneficial to incorporate numeracy skills into different subjects. Results may not be generalizable since they were conducted on a specific age group. Self-reported data may also be biased or inconsistent. There is a possibility that the results are not representative due to the small sample size and lack of accounting for potential confounding variables. The limitations may be addressed by broadening and diversifying the sample, evaluating numeracy skills objectively, as well as considering additional factors. During the course of preparing cross-curriculum lesson plans and fostering opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration among pre-service teachers Knox’s strategies changed my thinking in designing and providing specific pedagogical approaches and case studies rather than an in-depth analysis. Through careful task design, rubric development, and differentiation, I can ensure students grow in their numeracy skills. With design and analysis tasks, I can practice creativity and analysis, mathematical concepts and their practical applications can be integrated into the design process to ensure differentiation is present in the classroom which I a core aspect of my philosophy.

Module 1 week 4 Dorris, C., Winter, K., O'Hare, L., & Lwoga, E. T. (2022). A systematic review of mobile device use in the primary school classroom and its impact on pupil literacy and numeracy attainment. Journal of Educational Technology, 45(2), 256-278 https://doi-
org.libraryproxy.griffith.edu.au/10.1002/cl2.1155
In this systematic review, Dorris, Winter, O'Hare, and Lwoga evaluate the impact of integrating mobile devices into primary school classrooms on literacy and numeracy assessment. The authors conducted A comprehensive literature review, followed by a critical analysis of 30 relevant studies. An examination of mobile device integration in the classroom is presented in this paper, including an analysis of the implications for pupils' learning outcomes.
The authors also discuss the potential challenges and limitations of using mobile devices in the primary classroom, including student distraction and equity concerns. To gain a
deeper understanding of this topic, engaging in further research and interviewing pre-service teachers would be beneficial. Despite its shortcomings, the text provides a valuable resource for pre-service teachers in Australia. To improve literacy and numeracy in the classroom, we must use mobile devices as a springboard for further investigation and critical thinking. A comprehensive review of studies specifically focused on literacy and numeracy in Australian schools is beneficial to gain a deeper understanding of these subjects. They argue that appropriate training, support, and guidelines should be provided to maximise the educational benefits of mobile devices. Pre-service teachers and teachers will find the practical insights and recommendations provided helpful when designing effective instructional strategies and integrating curriculum
