Furthering your education can help to implement more effective techniques in your chosen field. As a Special Education instructor, I have a future goal of becoming a Special Education Coordinator, and completing this doctoral program will aid in giving me more knowledge and strategies to promote student growth in the classroom and beyond. Completing a doctoral program can come with plenty of challenges. Personal factors such as being a parent and environmental factors such as work will have to be adjusted to accomplish the doctoral program in its entirety (Marshall et al., 2017). One anticipated challenge for myself is working full time and implementing time towards my studies. There are many times when I have to take my work home, especially my compliance duties. Between lesson planning and modifying student materials, I often run out of time for compliance. I will have to tackle getting more of my compliance duties done at work. Then, I can focus on my doctoral program at home. I will use my planning period at school with more intention. There are two planning periods, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. The morning planning period I will use for compliance. In the afternoon, I will use modifying and lesson planning. To hold myself accountable, I will set a daily reminder alarm and on my work calendar to work on those items. This way, the time after work will ideally be available to work on my studies. Another anticipated challenge will be utilizing my time more efficiently as it relates to my home life. I will need to spend dedicated time with my young son. Being a single mother pushes me to do better, learn better and implement better. I will implement uninterrupted quality time with my son. I will choose a day, probably a Saturday, to spend intentional time with him. In addition, I will pick a specific activity to ensure we are using our time together wisely. I will not allow work on this day. Sundays are for me to turn in assignments and get ready for the new week. Using the strategies above, I will create self-awareness around my studies and especially with my dissertation (Marshall et al., 2017). Creating this self-awareness and intentionally creating opportunities to work will have a positive effect on my studies. I will also utilize any supports given to promote my productivity. Utilizing my strategies such as creating a set schedule to intentionally spend time with my son and my studies and creating a schedule at work to avoid bringing work home will have a substantial impact on my studies.
In my professional practice, I am an 8th-grade middle school Special Education teacher. I work in a full inclusion setting which means I push into all classes where students with IEP's (Individual Education Plan) need support. I also often support all students in the classroom during instruction. I give support in Math, Language & Literature (English Language Arts), Individuals & Societies (Social Studies), and Science. I co-teach with those teachers, participate in parallel teaching, teach a small group within the general education classroom, and modify and scaffold all student materials in all classes. I have also taught students with IEP's in a self-contained setting. Supporting and teaching students in full inclusion and self-contained settings have given me more insight and improved strategies used in the classroom. I have also taught as an elementary English Language Arts resource teacher and a middle school Math resource teacher. A student that I taught in the self-contained setting motivated me to pursue an advanced graduate degree focused on Special Education. When I first met this student, I was a new teacher with no idea on how to support him because he has many needs. The student had many needs that included academic, motor, language, and self-help. I taught this student for two years before i realized he had been teaching me. He was from Honduras and spoke a dialect of spanish. Getting to know him and his deficits made me realize his deficits were not as poor as the evaluation had seemed. His evaluations were also not given in his dialect of Spanish as the school had no access to anyone that spoke that particular language. This made me want to link English Language Learners and Special Education. Would he be considered to have fewer needs if he was evaluated in his language? Three topics of interest related to education that ignites my passion are English Language Learners and Special Education, why Black students are considered special education at higher rates than their peers, and how to help students become more independent and functional in the classroom and beyond. Then, explain what motivated you to pursue an advanced graduate degree in education and identify three topics of interest in fields related to education that ignite your passion. Finally, explain why these topics are important to you.
