Assessment overview
•
Locate, collate and evaluate teaching and assessment resources that support oral language or speaking and listening in either the Early Years or Primary years of schooling. (Learning outcomes 2,3 and 4)
•
You will be using the information from the learning materials and readings from week 5 (Early years) or week 6 (Primary School)
ONE AREA: You will have need to choose which area you will be focusing on, either early years or primary. This time, you do not need to focus on both.
ONE RESOURCE: You need to choose one relevant teaching resource that helps to support oral language development/speaking and listening skills. TWO ASSESSMENTS: You need to find two assessment resources/instruments that assess oral language or speaking and listening.
What makes a good teaching resource?
Is it relevant?
The resource chosen needs to be relevant to the topic we are investigating. It needs to be relevant and appropriate to your chosen year level. Either early years, lower, middle or upper primary.
Can it be modified?
Teachers like resources that can be modified to different learning needs. Can the resource be used in different situations or for different topics? Is it useful and an appropriate example of good teaching practice?
We are looking for resources that embody the principles of teaching and learning that we have learnt already in this unit. You want to have a resource that you could actually see yourself using in the future. Is it engaging?
You want to find a resource that is engaging for students. One that sparks their interest and makes them excited to participate.

What makes a good assessment?
Is the assessment testing oral language/speaking and listening?
Remember what the assessment is being used for. You need to find an appropriate assessment that is testing these skills. Do not choose an assessment of reading, writing or any other facet of literacy. It can encompass other skills but oral language should be the main focus.
Is it relevant to the children you are testing?
You need to find an assessment that is appropriate to the children you are testing. Is it modern? Is it culturally relevant to Australian children?
Time and teacher understanding.
How long does the assessment task take? Do you think this is reasonable to achieve for a classroom teacher? Can a teacher easily learn to administer the test?

Critical reflection of Assessment tasks
You will now write a critical reflection which COMPARES the two assessment tasks that you chose in the first part of this folio. You do not need to choose new assessments.
This reflection is 400 words. You need to include:
How well do the assessments assess children’s oral language skills?
What are the pros and cons of the assessments?
What are the gaps or potential issues that you have identified?
Do you have any suggestions for addressing these problems?
What could teachers do with the results from these tests? How will this effect their planning? How can you develop planning that is differentiated to the learning needs of the children?
Remember this requires critical thinking!
