: Autism Spectrum Disorder is an extremely prevalent developmental disability that effects
1 in 68 children in the United States (Pence Turnbull & Justice, 2017). In the “What is Autism?” video posted by Autism Live (2013), Angela Persicke defines Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) as a “developmental disorder characterized by deficits in communication and socialization, and the presence of restrictive or repetitive patterns of behavior or interests.” When discussing delays
in communication, Pence Turnbull and Justice (2017) suggest that individuals with ASD have the most difficulties with nonverbal communicative behaviors. These nonverbal behaviors are the

various modes of communication that individuals use without verbal language, such as: eye contact, gestures, facial expressions, body language, e.g. Individuals with ASD have difficulties in social situations and may not understand figurative or abstract language. These challenges, along with a lack of interest in other people, can make it hard for an individual with ASD to make and maintain friendships. There are many therapeutic options that some families choose to use, in order to teach social strategies and communication tools. Depending on the child’s severity of speech and language delays, the child may need to use an Assistive and Augmentative
Communication (AAC) device. It takes time for the child and family to learn how to utilize these
devices; however, it is important that every individual with ASD is able to express themselves. Children with ASD encounter many hurdles in regard to language and communication and there are a variety of ways to make their voices heard.
