rom the discussion tonight, what have you learned about community
counseling, prevention, outreach, and advocacy. How will you apply this to your role as a counselor?
Community Counseling
Such a bummer I was not able to attend the live meeting! Unfortunately, I work actively as a social worker in a K-12 school district. That definitely keeps me busy during the day! With that being said, I reviewed the PowerPoint presentation and do have some thoughts. I think that community based counseling is something that just happened in the community, until I started thinking about it more. My favorite line in the presentation was “The grass roots of community counseling focused on issues relevant to the community and using an outreach and prevention focus to help individuals deal with those issues”. As a community there are unique features and needs that might be different than other communities. Counseling is not just a one size fits all!
Prevention
Prevention is the foundational belief to reach as many people as can in order
to prevent, minimize, or ameliorate problem from occurring. Prevention is such a key step to help communities before a problem becomes out of hand. I learned that there are three models that can be used, primary, secondary, and tertiary. These can be known as prevention, early identifying to prevent further, and helping to decrease the problem.
Outreach
Outreach is defined as: “A systematic attempt to provide services beyond conventional
limits, as to particular segments of a community” (

). What I learned from this presentation, was that we need
to, as counselors, empower the people in communities that need it and that might mean leaving the office and going into communities we might not frequent but need to.
Advocacy
Throughout my undergrad, master’s, and working towards my doctorate, I have learned that advocacy is one of the most important factors when we think of counseling. Community based counseling includes advocating for the
community. To make sure there are networks with other agencies and also to make sure that there are appropriate workers.
Change
Going forward, I want to change my mindset to remember the community and the overall needs that need to be put in place. Often times, I get
wrapped up with working with people on a one on one setting and working with them with their problems and not thinking about how this is probably happening widely in the community.
Proverbs 31:8-9
Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who
are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.
