Check your post and call the HELP DESK if you need support In your responses to these questions below, incorporate any of the readings from this week that resonate the most for you. Don’t forget to use citations. 1. Explain this statement: The media constructs the message; the reader constructs the meaning. 2. Why is it important to take the time to look at the sources of news in media? 3. Background for Question #3: Imagine yourself as a professor in a community college. You are teaching the key differences that exist between the scientific perspective of evolution (evolutionary theory as the scientific explanation for the development of all life) and the religious idea of creationism (the belief in a god who is absolute creator of heaven and earth, and who created the earth out of nothing, by an act of free will). At the same time, you know that you will have to deal with concerned parents who have raised their young adult children to reject all theories of evolution in favor of creationism. They have been taught that in educational systems, the creationism “side” will never be presented fairly and they do not have to participate in an unfair discussion. Your Dean has asked you to intercede and assure the parents (and the students) that it makes sense for young adults to know the “full story” that exist son both sides of the debate. You are also tasked with ensuring that both the parents and students feel confident that you will present the debate in a responsible and ethical way. Question #3: Write a brief paragraph/script in which you have a “careful, caring conversation” with these parents in which you will incorporate your responses to B, C, and D) But -- FIRST -- you will take a moment to reflect on your own feelings by writing your response to A . (A) With whom do you initially feel frustration or sympathy? Why? Then, in this conversation, you will (B) Clarify to these parents your primary objectives in the classroom and why it is important to teach both sides.
(C) Persuade these parents to support your vision for a caring classroom in which all religions are treated with respect and value (pluralism). How will you handle misunderstandings if they should arise? (D) Explain how you will go about this classroom discussion by identifying the explicit, implicit, and null curriculum of your class lecture. Definitions: Explicit : What will be directly said to students. Implicit : What students will understand even though it is not said directly to them. Null : Whose voice is not heard or made “visible” or “known” in your classroom discussion? (For example, the “null” curriculum might be the voices of biased politicians who misrepresent the law regarding the discussion of religion in the classroom or extremists who have no tolerance for debate). Incorporate any of the readings from this week that resonate the most for you. This will help you to articulate your response clearly and accurately. Don’t forget to use citations. 4. You are on the hiring committee of a Baptist Christian College to consider candidates for a coaching position. The college president allegedly refuses to hire one specific applicant because of rumors that the applicant is a Zionist. You know that this is a worrisome issue because it is “not exactly” a problem of religious discrimination, because the applicant is not a practitioner of the Jewish religion. The candidate was born into a Jewish family but converted to Christianity during time at the school and on the football team. Question #4: You need to quickly correct this perception issue by having a “careful conversation” with the hiring committee. (A)In your own words, first, reflect: With whom do you initially feel frustration or sympathy? Why? Then, in your “careful conversation” with the hiring committee, you will: (B)Correct the perception issue by explaining what Zionism means and then, educate the committee about the importance of religious literacy. (C)Then, you will start this way: “You don’t have to be wrong for another person to be right. Zionism means .... (D) You will conclude by saying, “This actually demonstrates why we need to start teaching students in the about religious literacy in the classroom because ... Incorporate any of the readings from this week that resonate the most for you. This will help you to articulate your response clearly and accurately. Don’t forget to use citations.
5. What is the single most important thing that you learned in this week’s forum? Why is it important? 6. Comment on the posts of two of your classmates. What have they said that has captured your interest or attention? Explain why their posts have meaning for you.
