A Counseling Skills Experiment
As with all new skills, time and practice make a difference. The micro-skills used in counseling are no different. Practicing skills even in social conversation, offers insight into the effects of applying these skills so that you can use them intentionally in counseling. Intentionally use one of this week’s micro-skills (attending skills, encouragers, reflection of content, or reflection of feelings) in a social conversation
with a friend or co-worker. In 3 or 4 paragraphs
describe
what happened and identify the impact that using this micro-skill had upon the interaction. Be specific.
Respond here:
In a heartfelt conversation with my friend, she opened up about the profound emotional toll of experiencing four miscarriages and her growing distrust of doctors and the medical system. As she shared her struggles with fertility and the sadness surrounding her inability to conceive when desired, it became evident that the conversation required a delicate and empathetic approach. Employing the micro-skill of reflection of content, I mirrored her sentiments by paraphrasing the essence of her words. For instance, I reiterated her disappointment in the timing of not being able to have another baby when she wished, acknowledging the depth of her emotions and the challenging journey she had undergone.
The impact of using the reflection of content became palpable in the interaction. It provided a sense
of validation to my friend, assuring her that I truly heard and understood the complexity of her feelings. This mirroring not only allowed her to feel acknowledged but also facilitated a deeper level of connection. By articulating her experiences in my own words, it created a space for her to reflect on her emotions and allowed for a more profound exploration of her concerns. Furthermore, it helped to bridge the gap between her and the medical professionals, fostering an environment of trust as she felt her experiences were genuinely understood and respected.
In conclusion, the strategic use of the micro-skill of reflection of content played a pivotal role in enhancing the quality of the conversation. It allowed for a more empathetic and validating exchange, ultimately strengthening the emotional bond between us and providing my friend with the support she
needed during such a challenging time. This reflective approach also laid the foundation for a continued open dialogue, fostering an atmosphere of trust that encouraged her to share her feelings more openly and, in turn, enabling me to offer meaningful and supportive responses throughout our ongoing conversations. The impact of content reflection extended beyond that particular moment, creating a sustained environment of understanding and compassion in our friendship.

III.
Reflection – Study Buddy Practice
Instructions: One of you will be the talker (client) and the other will be the listener (counselor) for ten or more minutes. Take turns. Tell about something that happened to you recently. When you are the counselor
intentionally practice Attending behaviors, Encouragers, Reflection of Content, and Reflection of Feelings. Tell each other how it felt to be listened to by them. Be honest. In a paragraph or two, please reflect upon your experience of practicing counseling skills with your Study Buddy.
Respond here:
Practicing counseling skills with my study buddy was a revealing and valuable experience. Initially, I found myself struggling when my inclination was to impose my thoughts and advice on the situation, rather than allowing my study buddy to self-actualize and find her own answers. Recognizing this, I consciously shifted my approach to actively practice attending behaviors, encouragers, reflection of content, and reflection of feelings. The shift in focus allowed me to truly listen and understand her struggles with her teenage son without imposing my own judgments or solutions. It felt liberating to create a space where she could express herself openly, and in return, I felt a deeper connection and understanding of her experiences. This experience reinforced the importance of client-centered approaches, emphasizing that sometimes the most meaningful support is simply providing a non-
judgmental space for individuals to explore their own thoughts and feelings. It's a continuous learning process, and this reflection has given me valuable insights into the impact of genuinely applying counseling skills in a client-centered manner.
IV. Reflection – Practice with Dr. Nina
Instructions:
Choose to either attend a meeting, or play back one of the recordings, of the Practice with Dr. Nina. These are posted by your faculty in your classroom. In your reflection, first indicate which week and whether you attended in person or through the playback. Then in 2 or 3 paragraphs reflect upon the most memorable things from the practice and finish up with what you plan to do to help yourself to remember them.
I attended Dr. Nina’s practice in person on December 11, 2023.
The most memorable moment was the counseling example between Dr. Nina and G-man. Dr. Nina did an excellent job reflecting the content of G-man's statements. When she put into her own words the struggles G-man was having with his parents it not only let them know she heard what they were saying but also helped them better understand their own feelings. By paraphrasing and encapsulating the essence of G-man's statements, Dr. Nina not only validated their feelings but also prompted them to introspect. This reflective process was instrumental in helping G-man gain insight into their own emotions and the issues at hand.
To enhance my own abilities in content reflection, I am going to practice active listening by fully immersing yourself in the words of people I speak to this week. I will summarize and rephrase their statements, capturing the core meaning rather than simply repeating verbatim. Additionally, I plan to focus on empathetic communication, allowing my responses to convey genuine understanding and acknowledgment of the speaker's experiences. Developing these skills will not only strengthen my

ability to reflect content effectively but also contribute to fostering deeper connections in my day-to-
day interactions.
