Your supervisor lets you know that there has been a recent call from Sheila Jones, a 35-year-old female, whose nephew was recently killed as a result of gang violence in the community. Ms. Jones reports having difficulty eating and sleeping and is reaching out for help because she doesn’t want to be a burden to the rest of her family. Ms. Jones was seen three years ago at this agency for six months for issues with depression.

a. How would you use preparatory reviewing to prepare for your meeting with Ms. Jones?
I would review Ms. Jones existing records, notes, and assessment, review her goals treatment
plan if any and assess whether the goals have been achieved and identify any challenges or setbacks the Ms. Jones may have faced in achieving her goals. I would also assess for safety and potential risk the put together resources that I believe may be helpful to support our discussion. b. How would this be helpful?
Understanding the client by familiarizing myself with the exiting records will give me an idea of the client’s history and prevent risk of incidents that may result in negligence. I will help the client to feel heard and appreciated. Reduces repetitive ineffective recommendation as well as help prepare to effectively receive the client by understanding physical and mental challenges.
c. What might be challenging?
Access to the client file may become challenging as some systems deem file inactive after a period. Similarly, the notes may have been poorly documented, which may not give a clear indication of the client’s previous situation. Time constrains maybe another challenge to the reviewing process social worker maybe saddle with a heavy caseload. 2)
a. How would you use preparatory exploring to prepare for your meeting with Ms. Jones?
I would use preparatory exploring to prepare for the meeting with Ms. Jones by asking the supervisor if there is anything noteworthy about Ms. Jones during the call. I would also speak
with the past social worker who supported Ms. Jones during her first interaction with the organization.
b. How would this be helpful?
Speaking with the person who took the call may give incite to Ms. Jones current mental state. Exploring more about the client with the previous worker and providing useful information that may not have been included during the recording process. It also guides the expectation of the meeting by ensuring the social worker has the necessary tools in place to assist Ms. Jones.
c. What might be challenging?
The challenge that may arise from the exploring process is the development of preconceive notions or bias based on the information gained. Also it can lead to false expectation or an inaccurate picture of what the present situation is.

a. How would you use preparatory consulting to prepare for your meeting with Ms. Jones? I would seek out my supervisor or senior colleague and discuss the finding on Ms. Jones file during the reviewing process. I would seek guidance on dealing with grief and loss. Similarly, I would consult literature on dealing with trauma, loss, and depression. b. How would this be helpful? It will help me to be ready to provide guidance for Ms. Jones as we unpack her feelings and experience. It can also help me with new techniques as well as refresh old ones. It can also enlighten me on how best Ms. Jones feels comfortable and in what setting.
c. What might be challenging? Developing preconceived notions based on information gathered as well as listening to correct rather than listening to understand as I maybe of the view that I understand her trauma and how to effectively guide her.

a. How would you use preparatory arranging to prepare for your meeting with Ms. Jones
? I would look for a meeting room where I can meet with Ms. Jones in private if my office space is shared on. I would ensure that I have water and tissue on hand. To speak with Ms. Jones, I would like the room to feel inviting therefore the chairs will be placed in front of the desk if in the office. Literature and fliers on grief and loss will also be available for the client should she need some reinforce reading. b. How would this be helpful?
Having a space that is open and inviting will determine how willing Ms. Jones will be to open about her feelings. And be receptive to the guidance that I am willing to give. Also making a good first impression will ensure that future meetings will not be rejected.
c. What might be challenging?
The space for the meeting may be overbooked at the time of the meeting. Client may not feel safe in the space created due to current experience.
