YOUR NAME
: Natalia Conley
Where did Dr. Lydia Jennings grow up? (short answer)
Santa Fe, New Mexico
Where did Dr. Jennings earn her PhD and where does she live now? (short answer)
Tucson, Arizona
University of Arizona
What type of geoscientist is Dr. Jennings? (short answer)
Soil Microbiologist, indigenous soil scientist
Describe (2) of Dr. Jennings’ current research projects. (2-3 sentences)
One of her current research projects is “Run for Soil” where she has a passion for running and
gives knowledge to soil science, she tells the stories of soil. She represents indigenous
representations in STEM fields while linking the public to physical activity and knowledge.
In addition, another one of her current research projects is “skull run den” and she would have
volunteers, family, and friends do a 10-mile run.
What material does Dr. Jennings use to make her paints? (1-2 sentences)
They use materials that they found on the major stops during the trial, and at the end, they do a
painting session and reflect on that. This represents friendship, identity, and passion within soil
science.
What is one of Dr. Jennings’ hobbies outside of her regular science? (short answer)
Trail Running, running, cross country.
Geoscience is a broad field, and geoscientists can come from all walks of life. Has learning
about Dr. Jennings changed your perception of geoscientists? [In your own words explain why
or why not] (4-5 sentences)
Learning about Dr. Jennings did change my perception of geoscientists because at first, I
thought it was a lot of studying and almost nerdy. I like how specifically Dr. Jennings
incorporates her hobby of running with her passion for soil and she mentions in the podcast as
well that two other women are teachers and incorporate their passion with their hobby of
teaching. This changed my perception of how I view soil now in a way. My favorite line that she
that was “Why talk on the land when you can talk with the land”, I liked this line because it
shows her passion for being with land and soil and protecting it at all costs while educating
others about it as well. Dr. Jennings specifically changed my perceptions of the earth itself and
through geoscientists because she advocates her knowledge while continuing to do her hobbies
and is creating a change.
Dr. Jennings says that her culture has influenced her science and how she approaches science.
Has your culture or personal identity affected how you approach the classes that you’re taking at
ASU? [In your own words explain your answer] (4-5 sentences)
Growing up in a different country for the first five years of my life and having a first-generation
European in my house changed how I view education. In Serbia, where my mother is from,
education is not as valued as it is in the United States, why my mother moved essentials to the
States. Having some background from cultures I have noticed I am much more open to new
cultures and diversity and find myself taking lots of religion classes. I can almost have a minor in
religion from all the religion classes I have taken. I think because my mother has such high
expectations for the education here, I find myself under a lot of pressure to perform well in
college. I will say it has made me motivated to become a first-generation college student and
hopefully attend law school.
