Part 1: 1) an argument of why the topic you have chosen is both important AND
important to you (minimum 500 words)
Our generation's mental health is greatly influenced by the effects of social media. Our mental
health is influenced by our psychological, emotional, and social well-being. Mental health also
influences how we make decisions, connect with others, and deal with stress. Social media is a
platform that allows people to express and share their material with the rest of the world by
networking via the internet. As a university student surrounded by social media and other teenagers, I
am well aware of the harmful impacts of social media. It is undeniable that our mental health has
suffered as a result of our use of social media.
Social media platforms such as Snapchat, Instagram, and Twitter, as well as online video
games such as PlayStation Plus, contain negative characteristics that can lead to mental health
concerns such as anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, and a lack of sleep, which can lead to other
problems. Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter are three of the most widely used social networking
networks. Social networking is a blessing. People may use social media to interact with one another,
share their life with others, get support, and get guidance. It enables people to express themselves
and make a difference. This generation has grown up with social media, which has become an
important part of many youngsters' lives, yet this gift may also have a bad influence on individuals,
even teenagers. People who grew up in the internet age are all too acquainted with the constant
litany of how the internet can be hazardous.
Although social media plays an important role in everyday life, it consumes a lot of time,
which is one of the many reasons why it can have a bad impact on people's mental health. The use of
social media sites such as Snapchat, Instagram, Tinder, and others has a negative impact on one's
mental health. Depression, eating problems, suicidal thoughts, and other side effects are common.
Teens are already under pressure to use social media. When they are on it, people feel the need to
maintain a positive image of themselves in order to maintain their self-esteem and confidence. People
with poor self-esteem and confidence utilize social media more frequently than others to make them
feel better about themselves. They aren't at ease with themselves and use social media to advertise
themselves.
When someone is scrolling through their Instagram feed and comes across a fitness page or
model, they want to look like them and feel comfortable uploading more aesthetic photographs, and
they develop anxiety and sadness since they do not look like them, which leads to eating disorders.
The use of these platforms might also result in social isolation. Social isolation is defined as a lack of
contact between a person and society. The physical and physiological impacts of social isolation are
well established. To contribute to solutions for the impact of social media on the mental health of our
age, we must be aware of all side effects, both positive and bad. The value of comprehending this
broad issue may inspire and educate other struggling teenagers like me.

The authors claim in their article that because frequent social media usage is linked to subsequent
mental health issues, their findings should spur additional rigorous experimental research to see if
therapies targeting social media use will reduce psychopathology in teenagers. Furthermore, the
paper discusses the attempt to control for underlying psychopathology by controlling for internalising
and externalising symptoms, marijuana use, and alcohol use, all of which were examined a year
before the social media evaluation. The authors' methodology is based on the assumption that

The purpose of this study is to look at how adolescent girls' physical activity, mental health, sleep, and
social media use vary under lockdown. According to the study, lengthy school closures may have a
negative impact not just on scholastic attainment but also on the physical and emotional health of
children and adolescents. However, there is evidence of a link between mobile screen use and poor
mental health and well-being outcomes in adolescents.Frequent mobile phone usage has also been
linked to sleep issues, and use of digital media near bedtime, in particular, may have a detrimental
impact on sleep. Furthermore, sleep quality is worse during school holiday closures, which may
increase feelings of depression, stress, and anxiety during lockdowns.
