The social science issue that I have selected to research is how social media changes interpersonal interaction and communication.
This is an important topic to address in today’s social atmosphere because it involves how the next generation will communicate with one another. In the past few years, communication has more rapidly become based on social media and not in person. COVID accelerated this shift, but it was headed in that direction beforehand anyway. How people communicate with one another is a very important discussion to have, because every aspect of our lives as humans is affected by communication,
so a change in how that happens is significant to everybody. The social science principle that applies to my issue the most is social norms. These are attitudes and behaviors that are recognized by society as a whole as the regular thing that everybody does. This applies to my social science issue because it deals with the social norm of the acceptable way that everybody talks to one another. Whatever is accepted as the norm will be the most common way of communication in society. In the past few years, strides have been made at making communication much more online based than in years past. Although norms are not a law or any kind of rule, they are what the majority of society does. This shows how the social science principle of social norms relates to the communication shift
going on in society right now because it deals with the normal behavior of the society and not rules or laws.
