●
Socioeconomic Status/Poverty
●
LGBTQIA+

●
Family Structure
Once you have identified your two videos, you will need to watch your videos and create at least 2 discussion questions for each video that you would include in a professional development you would give to educators about diversity. Complete the area below with your video links and discussion questions. Your discussion questions should be focused on improving teaching to meet the diverse needs of students. Your questions also need to be more than yes/no type questions – we want to open dialogue.

I chose to watch the videos and webinars about poverty because that is what I deal with the most teaching in my district. Working in a low-income district I felt these would be the most important to me right now. These videos were eye-opening, to say the least. Thinking that my district is low-income because of being in a very rural area was wrong. There are big cities that have low-
income districts just like the one I teach in. Is the quality of education determined by if the school is in a low-income or high-income community? Why is this still an issue that children have to deal with? No matter where you live, you should be entitled to the best education regardless of socioeconomic status or what the diversity is. Low-income students have the same rights as high-income students. The children that suffer from this, have no control in this whatsoever. Treating them as they are less than any other student is unacceptable. They cannot control the income their parents make in any way. Living in poverty areas sometimes means the schools will not have the best teachers. Why is this? Why do teachers not want to teach in low-income areas? Do they make less money? Do they feel as though they are too good to teach those low-income children? Are they biased? I’m not sure what some of these answers are, but would really like to know. Page 6

Some children in low-income areas often do not have hot water to shower with and may not even have electricity. They may
come to school dirty, but is that their fault? They should be treated equally as everyone else. They may have gone to bed hungry the night before and it is hard for them to focus. We as teachers need to put our biases aside and give these children the best education we can. Make sure we provide them with everything they need to learn. Give them all the resources to do their homework. Show some empathy and help these students, sometimes a hug can go a long way. Give them the same chance that you give that high-
income student. There are things I do in my class to avoid making these low-income students feel worse than they already do. Do not ask certain questions about vacations in the summer when they return to school, instead ask them what some of their goals may be for the upcoming school year. Many students do not have the luxury of going on trips or vacations with their families. Things they take for granted, some children do not get. Do not ask what Santa is bringing them, because they may not celebrate Christmas, or their parents may not be able to afford Christmas gifts. Do not ask questions that could embarrass them. Do your best to make them feel good about school and not feel worse about themselves. All teachers should show empathy toward every student they have who walks in their doorway at school. No matter the situation, no matter their race, no matter their sexual preference, no matter their socioeconomic status, no matter anything. Be their ally and their safe place, so they can learn. Give them the education they each deserve. Page 7
Moving forward in my class, there are some things I would like to work on. I think implementing more surveys for students and parents to take, would give me the place data that I would need to know who exactly was in my class. This would help me understand the students better and what struggles they may be facing as well. I need to improve my intergroup relations in my classroom. My goal is to bridge the gap between low-income students and their high-income peers.
