Description/Guidelines
Setting the Stage
Section 1
:
I will be persuading my
audience
to consider keeping the arts in the
curriculum, especially within high schools despite budget cuts nationwide due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The many reasons of persuading my
audience
to consider saving the arts in schools include positive self-esteem, lower mental health concerns, positive
self-worth, self-esteem and positive social happiness.
Section 2
: Persuasive Proposition and
Call-to-
Action
/ Policy considerations
I want my
audience
to value my point of view since many schools have been forced to cut their arts programs due to budget cuts while saving other programs. Now, with the pandemic, more schools are using this as an excuse instead of realizing the value and importance of the arts within schools and most importantly, on children and young adults.
With my
research
and studies, I’ll be discussing, more will understand and realize of the true impact the arts can have on children and young adults today. Even though many decisions are being made due to budget cuts, this is why some may disagree with
saving the arts, instead of looking at the bigger picture.
Stop Here: conduct
research
on your
topic
–locating at least 2 credible sources— to learn more
about it
Section 3
: Draft a
thesis statement
.
I will be discussing today while persuading you to consider saving the arts in schools today across the nation. Ask yourself the question, “what if my child was in the arts and I saw great results in them, but yet the school was considering cutting the program?”
Section 4:
Identify your intended
audience
.
My speech will be directed at parents, local community members, high school administrators, high school staff members, etc.
Section 5:
Rhetorical Considerations
I will be persuading my
audience
using the
Proposition of Value
rhetorical consideration, while providing them with the value of the arts on children and young adults in schools today. I will providing statistical
analysis
and reasoning within
my
research
to support this value proposition.
I want to establish credibility with my
audience
by using emotional
appeal on this
topic
along with providing credible sources to back up my current persuasive stance. I understand some members may not have their children in the arts programs, making it harder for them to formulate an informed decision.
I understand this and do not want to consider cutting other programs, but rather find other resources/funds to help the current budget state of the arts and why it can be saved. This can help my persuasive approach along with establishing rapport and credibility with them while presenting on this specific
topic
.
By providing statistical
analysis
and reasoning, my
audience
will understand and appreciate my persuasive approach/stance on this
topic
and its importance and relevance going forward, especially related to the emotional well-being of a child/young adult.
Planning the Speech
Section 6:
Draft your Introduction
(Use complete sentences to draft your working introduction.)
Today, I will be persuading you to consider saving the arts in the curriculum of high schools. What does
this mean to you? What if I told you children and young adults who study the arts can be inspired and motivated to bring about positive change.
Also, what if I told you those children and young adults enrolled in an arts program are less likely to have disciplinary actions/referrals, have higher score in subjects, such as math, reading and writing, according to an educational article entitled,
Keeping The Arts In The Curriculum
by Matthew Lynch.
Most importantly, the arts sets up and provides success for future generations of learners, educators and scholars.
I urge you to consider my reasoning as I provide you with the
values
and benefits the arts can have on your
child, your neighbor’s child, your nephew, your niece, or simply someone you know.

Section 7
: Main Body–
Minimum 3 Points
Main Point #1:
The Arts provides structure for children and young adults that lasts a lifetime. Please absorb these findings as I present them to you.
Arts and Education can help the social and well-being of a child and young adult, especially as schools are getting back to normal from the pandemic, according to studies within the article,
Arts Education Can Help Students’ Social and Emotional Well-
Being as They Transition Back to In-
Person School
by Neve Spicer.
The Arts and Education programs can help students and young adults explore new ideas along with using their creativity to formulate new ideas and problem-solving (Spicer).
(change slide)
Participating in the Arts and Education programs have found to reduce anxiety,
depression and stress amongst children and young adults (Spicer). These findings speak for themselves and showcases the importance and significance of keeping these programs in place.
Transition: The importance of keeping these programs in the Arts and Education also is important related to other areas such as creativity that is long-lasting toward these children and
young adults.
Main Point #2:
The Arts encourages creativity in children and young adults that is present in daily activities, future job professions, and within social interactions/settings.
In the article,
The Benefits of Arts Education for K-12 students
by Andrew
Warner, it discussed the importance of students enrolled in the Arts gaining real-world experiences, along with teamwork and adversity that other after-
school activities provides, such as

sports.
It has been shown that students who participate in the Arts and Education programs, specifically in music and theatre display effective communication
and social and emotional skills, not just in collaborative areas, but in society as well (Warner).
(change slide)
Just as important, children and young adults participating in the Arts and Education programs engage in healthy interpersonal and socio-emotional skills, effectively handle constructive criticism and improve overall academic achievement (Warner).
Transition: Even though I’ve listed these benefits and rewards of the Arts, there are still budget cuts occurring due to administrators and others not emphasizing a long-term sustainability to them.
Main Point #3:
Even though more schools are prioritizing the Arts in their curriculum, more need to
be able to sustain them long-term. Sustaining an Arts
program is of high importance and an aspect that
needs
to be addressed.
I encourage school districts and administrators, along with parents and teachers to advocate for a curriculum-
based Arts and Education program. How can this be accomplished?
I stress the importance of keeping these Arts and Education programs in place, however there are ways that classes can
still be implemented into other courses, if the curriculum is cut due to budget constraints.
Some creative ideas can be to have students engage in plays instead of writing and reading them, as in an English class (Lynch). This displays the
art of acting out the play instead of just
reading it out.
(change slide)
Another creative idea can be for high school teachers to include dance as part of a physical education class, providing the students with a key element of Art and Education (Lynch).
Transition: These creative strategies and ideas to keep the Arts
curriculum in place offers significant benefits not just short-
term, but long-term as well.
Main Point #4:
The benefits of an Arts program outweigh any risks involved such as money, and these benefits last a lifetime in the lives of children who then become adults.
Such as with other after-school programs such as
sports, the Arts offer
team
-building and skill-building skills that show up in the classroom along with in future job professions, especially if they choose a profession within this field (Warner).
(change slide)
The Arts allows for expression and confidence-building and self-esteem aspects that have a positive impact in society.
Additionally, students enrolled in an Arts and Education program get to experience the notion of unique techniques that teach a positive self-awareness and confidence long-term.
(change slide)
A recent study within the National Endowment for the Arts concluded that those who participated more in a specific Arts program experienced more positive outcomes in areas such as high school graduation rates and community involvement (Warner).
Transition: As you can see, there have been influential studies to show the importance of supporting the Arts going forward, especially for future generation of children and young adults.
(change slide)
Main Point #5:
The future of the Arts can be saved and successful if we all come together and realize the positive impact it
can have on the life of a child and young adult.
Those participating in the Arts get to experience an engaging experience that sets them up for future success and positive self-esteem, especially in children.
(change slide)
Being able to learn how to effectively play an instrument or participate in a play, those in the Arts experience growth and confidence while engaging in these activities (Warner).

Conclusion
As you can see, saving the Arts programs across the nation isn’t only positively impacting current children and young adults, but future generations of students.
After
listening
to my persuasive propositional of value related to the Arts, I urge you to consider doing
your part to save the current and future state of this sector. It may be simply speaking up at a board meeting or at a parent-teacher conference, but the impact will be felt with your support going forward.
Lastly, think of the future children and young adults who can be helped and supported with your support

of the Arts. It’s enough for me knowing all it takes is
for a young kid to try out playing a flute or acting in a
play to make a difference and find their passion. It can’t happen if we don’t act and support the Arts now!
