Miss Anderson: Hello Mr. Bolanos, it's nice to sit down and have a formal meeting with you regarding Gabriel’s transition to the district as well as his academic and social performance. I’m Miss Anderson. Mr. Bolanos: Hello Miss. Anderson, I’m glad we were able to find a time to meet. I’m very interested in learning how Gabriel has been progressing and adjusting to his new school. Miss Anderson: Regarding Gabriels progress, as you know Gabriel's test scores are below grade level. I know that as of recently you moved into this district and for a student that can be very difficult for a student to adjust. This could be a factor in his decrease in academic performance. Is there anything you would like to discuss regarding the possible influences on Gabriel’s academic performance. Mr. Bolanos: Gabriel was very comfortable at his old school. As I’ve told you before, my ex wife and I have been going through troubles at home and have recently been divorced. I try to be there as much as I can for Gabriel at home, but working full time really takes up a lot of my time to spend with him. Is there any way he can get extra help? He has told me that he is doing his best in class. According to his scores, it appears that is not the case. Miss Anderson: My main job as Gabriel’s teacher is to see him succeed both as a student, and also help him progress into an adult. His scores on standardized testing are supposed to be a measure of his academic intelligence. However when children are struggling at home or dealing with transition this can be difficult for them. Gabriel’s most recent academic testing shows below grade level performance, but that does not mean he doesn’t comprehend the material. Mr. Bolanos: Well, he is new to the school and he is very smart, but you may also know he is very shy. Could it be he’s not getting the support needed to help him succeed given he is new to the district and the things going on in his home life. He’s a young child and that could be very
hard on any person going through that. Could it be he’s getting brushed under the rug based on his performance at his old school. Miss Anderson: I understand that this is a very difficult thing for Gabriel to go through. However, I am going to work with you on what we can do to help Gabriel improve his test scores as well as his overall academic performance and comfort level in this new school. To begin I know that Gabriel is shy but will participate with his peers and will answer when called on. This is a great strength and I think that possibly implementing a social IEP or 504 would be helpful to continue the growth and development of social skills. Gabriel is also very intelligent when it comes to science based topics. Is there something that you think we should attempt to implement first to help with Gabriel’s social skills and/or his academic performance in math or literature. Mr. Bolanos: Are there any particular students he is comfortable around? He hasn’t told me about any friends at school, but I’m not with him for the majority of the day. Maybe seating him next to someone he gets along with could help. For literature is there any science based readings he could do to help him improve his performance for that subject. I know he loves science. Doing a reading on a science related subject could help him progress. Miss Anderson: I’ve noticed a significant friendship develop between Gabriel, Jackson, and Robbie. During recess and free time they will gather together and play in the grass and when I asked Gabriel what they were doing he stated that they were playing scientist. We have also begun working in small groups and Gabriel has just recently begun speaking in the groups freely rather than only when called on. I have attempted to place students with peers that both get along but also have similar academic performance. I agree that I could implement more science based readings as well as math problems so that students have the choice of which worksheet they would like to do based on their interest. My next step for Gabriel would be to implement a social
IEP or 504 as well as begin to use our MTSS model in which we will place Gabriel in Tier 2. Would you like more information regarding MTSS and what the benefits are for Gabriel? Mr. Bolanos: I believe the most important thing for Gabriel is to become more social and make friends. I know my son is bright and the more comfortable he gets, the more outgoing he will become. Hearing that he is on the playground relating to other students through imaginative play makes me happy to hear. I am up for anything that could support my son, but I still think he is adjusting to the new school. Could you tell me about MTSS? Miss Anderson: MTSS is Multiple Tiered Systems of Support which has three different tiers. Tier one is where we strive for students to be but there is no shame in ever needing some extra support. Tier 2 is where we would initially place Gabriel as he would receive extra time throughout the day on the topics he is struggling in. Over the course of time we would reassess Gabriels scores and hope that after around 4 to 8 weeks of intervention we can place Gabriel in the Tier one placement with his peers. Does this sound as though it would benefit Gabriel’s development? Mr. Bolanos: I think that sounds great for Gabriel. I want him to feel supported and given the best opportunity to succeed while venturing through this new environment. MTSS seems like a great plan for him. I want him to feel support from his teachers and peers and that seems like the best fit for him. I know he is good at what he does, and that extra time on struggling topics would really help him get in the groove and progress smoothly throughout the year. Miss Anderson: Ok perfect! We can start next Monday with the official placement. We will begin by tomorrow testing his ability levels in subjects so we have a baseline that we are starting with. Are there any other concerns you have regarding Gabriel’s integration into the school district and classroom.

Mr. Bolanos: I think we have covered most of my concerns. I want him to feel comfortable here and given the best opportunity to succeed and I really think this will suit him best. I really appreciate the input you have given me. I just hope he starts to tell me more about his day. Thank you Miss. Anderson. Miss Anderson: That's what I’m here for, is to help your student become the best they can be. Finally in regard to our plan, how would you like to communicate regarding Gabriel’s development. Mr. Bolanos: I think that continuing communication via email weekly would be my preferred form of communication. I also think having a monthly conference either in person or via zoom would be helpful for us to discuss his development. Miss Anderson: I would agree that weekly email communication would be beneficial as well as a monthly meeting together. I am thankful that we now have a plan regarding Gabriel’s social development and the impact that some things in his life are having regarding his academic performance. I look forward to continuing communication with you regarding Gabriel’s development and growth this academic year. Mr. Bolanos: I look forward to hearing from you and think that you are doing all in your power to make Gabriel as successful academically and socially that he can be.
