Pros and Cons of Media Monopolies
The relationship between media monopolies, citizens, and consumerism has long been a
complicated relationship. There are positives and negatives with both media monopolies and big
tech when it comes to communication.
The influence that media monopolies and big tech companies have on citizens has both
pros and cons. Big tech companies and platforms have become an integral part of our everyday
lives for their ability to communicate efficiently and information dissemination. These platforms
are able to enhance the experience of the users with the help of algorithms platforms can
customize the content a user sees based on the users data and previous content they engage with.
By customizing each individual's experience they make the platforms more enjoyable and more
likely to use.
Media monopolies and big tech have a huge impact on the way we communicate and
connect with others. Social media has enabled us to easily stay in contact with friends and family
around the world while also making new connections. The ability to connect and learn with and
from people from around the world has helped break down barriers and promote cultural
understanding.
As with anything, there are always cons as well. With the domination of the media
monopolies and big tech there are concerns over the amount of power that is placed into the few
companies. Companies like TikTok, Google, Amazon, and more have been trusted to control
what information people see and hear. This can have very serious consequences for democracy,
specifically our first amendment as the information the public sees can be censored and
manipulated to benefit the companies interests.

To sum it up, media monopolies and big tech have numerous benefits for society while
also having a negative side such as privacy rights, power, and democracy concerns. We as
citizens have a responsibility to be aware of the amount of control they have over our accounts.
Finding the balance between the positives and negatives of media monopolies and big tech
companies will enable us to use the platforms to their full potential while also protecting the
public from misinformation and our privacy.
