University of California at Berkeley Fall 2023 Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering CE 153 Airport Design Take-home Midterm Exam Released: October 20th, 2023 Due: October 27th, 2023 Name:____________________________________________ E-mail Address:____________________________________ This midterm exam consists of three main parts. Part I has a total of 22 points; Part II has a total of 16 points; Part III has a total of 8 points. This exam is open book, open notes, and you are expected to complete it individually. Part I In your HW#4 you calculated capacity for 3 single-runway airports. Imagine that these 3 runways belong to one airport. You are asked to discuss the total capacity of a 3-parallel runway airport system using different spacing among 3 parallel runways. Refer to lectures: 12 (Airfield Capacity Part 1), 13 (Airfield Capacity Part 2) and 14 (Capacity and Delay). For the purpose of developing your answers, please use the assumptions stated below. There is no single right answer because an airport can operate under different conditions: (a) IFR or VFR; and (b) arrivals only, departures only, or mixed operations . Assume that the capacity of the first runway is C 1 . (i.e. you don’t have to specify the number of operations.) 1. How many different triple-parallel runway configurations can you create using specific runway spacing specified in lecture slides? Draw runways and specify runway spacing. (10pt) 2. How would taxiway exits on the runways affect the capacity of different aircraft fleet (ie. spacing of exits, type of exits, quantity, etc.)? (4pt) 3. What is the airport capacity C A of each triple-parallel-runway configuration you specified in 1.1 under the conditions below in (a) and (b)? Assume that the first runway has the capacity C 1 . State all assumptions. (a) in IFR conditions, arrivals only (4pt) (b) in VFR conditions, arrivals only (4pt) CE 153 Take-home Midterm – Fall 2023
University of California at Berkeley Fall 2023 Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Part II 1. An airport wants to build a new runway parallel to its current one. It gives the following information: “The proposed runway 8/26 will have a length of 10,000ft to accommodate longer flight take-off and landings and will be around 4300ft from the existing runway. When taking off to the east, there’ll be a CWY of 1,000ft which includes a STWY distance of 400ft for emergencies. There are many taller buildings to the east of the airport, so a displaced threshold of 300ft would also be needed. Taking off toward the west, there’s a small 200ft dirt patch that flights can use as a CWY after a paved 700ft STWY.” (a) Provide a sketch of the described runway and calculate the LDA, TORA, ASDA, and TODA for each runway direction. (5pt) (b) How would these distances affect runway operations at this airport? Are there any values or areas the airport should consider changing before proceeding to build the runway? (1pt) 2. A 747-400 plane with CF680C2B1 engines needs to take off from a high-altitude airport (7000ft) on a standard day with no wind. The TODA is 14,600ft and there exists a clearway and stopway of 1,500ft total. The flight range is 5000 NM to the destination airport at 4000ft altitude where there is a 9,000ft runway. Assume each passenger, including luggage, weighs 275 lbs. (a) Can you calculate how many passengers can safely be accommodated for this flight? (4pt) (b) Assume the flight will now hold max passenger capacity in a 2-class layout. How much luggage can each passenger carry on board with them if all passengers average a weight of 120 lbs? (4pt) (c) If the wind is now constantly blowing from the east at 17 knots, what range of runway angles can safely accommodate this trip? Assume a crosswind tolerance of 15 knots and tailwind tolerance of 60 knots. (2pt) Part III Explain your term project in a couple of sentences and discuss the following: 1. In your view, does your term project design offer fresh thinking or new ways of approaching the problem? Explain. (4pt) 2. Does the design topic reflect creativity and imagination on the student’s or team’s part? Explain. (4pt) CE 153 Take-home Midterm – Fall 2023
University of California at Berkeley Fall 2023 Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Part IV (optional feedback) What is your favorite thing you have learned in this course so far? (0pt) Do you have any advice that the instructors can do to improve your learning experience? (0pt) CE 153 Take-home Midterm – Fall 2023
