EDUC 6400 Week 1 Discussion Greetings to all, I am Rahima, currently residing in Auburn, Maine, a region in the far east where the chill of winter seems perpetual. Explain what prompted your decision to become a teacher? My decision to pursue a career in teaching was largely influenced by my deep- seated affection for children. At the tender age of 15, I began tutoring and assisting kindergarten and elementary students. The sight of these young learners eagerly seeking help with their homework filled me with a sense of joy and fulfillment. These were moments when I felt I was making a tangible difference in a child’s life. This experience instilled in me a profound desire to become a teacher, to provide care and guidance to these young minds on a level that some may not fully comprehend. Today, I am a proud parent to three wonderful boys, aged 1, 3, and 6. They are my world, and being able to support them in their learning journey has only reinforced my decision to extend this support to other children as well. Describe your concept of what makes a teacher a professional? In my view, a professional teacher is characterized by the empathy they extend to each individual student in the classroom. This empathy, a deep understanding and sharing of the emotional state of others, is a cornerstone of effective teaching. It allows teachers to connect with each student on a personal level, fostering a
learning environment that is both supportive and engaging. This, I believe, is what truly defines a professional teacher. The concept that was particularly striking was the one presented in “The Professional Educator: Voices from the Field Part 2” by Miss Erika Mares, specifically from the timestamp 3:21 to 4:06. Miss Mares asserts, “A teacher is someone who is educated.” She emphasizes that the students a teacher will encounter will be multicultural. Therefore, it is incumbent upon the teacher to conduct thorough research and acquire the necessary knowledge to effectively serve these students. If a teacher finds themselves lacking in this area, she encourages them to seek professional development. This is because a teacher must be equipped to meet the diverse needs of their students. This perspective underscores the importance of continuous learning and adaptability in the teaching profession. Furthermore, I believe a teacher’s ability to effectively serve students from diverse backgrounds extends beyond academic instruction. It involves forming an emotional connection with the students, which I personally found lacking in my own educational experience. This emotional connection can significantly enhance the support provided to the students. Describe one concept or statement about teaching from the reading or a featured teacher on video that is particularly inspiring to you. Explain why the concept/statement inspires you and how you want to use it as guidance through your professional journey.
A concept that profoundly resonated with me was articulated by Miss Veronica Martinez in the second video, specifically from the timestamp 4:25 to 5:00. She recounted a powerful message from a training session she attended, urging educators to “Cease referring to yourself as ‘just a teacher.’ Carry yourself with dignity, take pride in your role, for you are changing lives. You teach out of love and care.” This sentiment is deeply inspiring to me as it aligns perfectly with my own motivations for wanting to become a teacher. My desire to teach stems from a deep-seated love and care for children. I intend to use this powerful message as a constant source of motivation, fueling my unwavering commitment to the students I will have the privilege of teaching.
