CIE 323A STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS SUMMER 2023 ASSIGNMENT No. 1 Introduction to Structural Engineering Kindly submit the assignment in one PDF file. Problem No. 1: Case study on the Florida International University pedestrian bridge collapse On March 15, 2018, the Florida International University pedestrian bridge collapsed when a 175-foot-long section of the FIU-Sweetwater University Pedestrian Bridge failed during the construction phase. The collapse resulted in six deaths, ten injuries, and eight vehicles being crushed underneath. You are asked to review a report or papers written on this bridge collapse and compose an essay (approximately one page). Summarize the findings as to why the bridge collapsed. You must also provide your opinions on how the professional and ethical obligations of the engineers involved in the project were (or not) met and how in your opinion these influenced the catastrophic outcome of this project. Note that Wikipedia, and random websites are not legitimate resources for professional work but textbooks, professional websites (ex. ASCE website), codes, published papers, and reports are. Copying the exact words from a resource is plagiarism.
Problem No. 2 Take pictures 1 (approximately 4” x 6”) of existing structures (buildings, bridges, etc.) incorporating three of the following structural forms: • A simply supported beam • A plane truss • An arch • A frame • A dome The selected structures can contain one or several of the above structural forms. For each structural form, indicate the following information: • the name of the structure it is part of (if known); • its location; • the types of materials used; • its approximate dimensions (length, width and height); • the types and the directions of the applied service loads; • the locations and directions of the support reactions. Please glue or staple your photos on engineering paper and use engineering paper to provide the required information on each of the structural type that you have selected. On engineering paper, draw a qualitative free body diagram of the complete structure showing the direction of each applied load and how it is transmitted to the supports.
