Kyle Carriker November 14, 2023 ABE 224 Lab 4: Runoff Objectives The purpose of this lab is to Determine the runoff volume in ha-m for a 100-yr 24-hr storm given a certain number of parameters to help calculate the runoff accurately. This taught us the skills needed to work with water runoff and its associated equations. Materials and Methods This lab did not require any raw materials or technology to complete. This lab did however utilize a set of given equations that were used to calculate the necessary components to calculate the runoff coefficient. We also used the 1972/1986 SCS chart containing the runoff curves for urban areas with average runoff conditions. We used these numbers in the given equations for the runoff coefficient. We used the given precipitation chart to calculate the total precipitation for a 100yr 24hr rainstorm in Champaign. We then found the condition of the rainfall with the given rainfall. We then use the area and Curve numbers to find the weighted average Curve number of the area. We then use the SCS method for Runoff value estimation. Finally, we convert the mm found of runoff to ha-m for our final values. Results Using the given table we found the precipitation to be 6.89mm for that size storm. Then using the given info we find that the rainfall is Condition 3. We then find the weight CN to be 91.9. Using all of this information we are able to find the runoff in mm to be 150.7 and in ha-m to be 1.51*10^-3. If we were to reduce the 5-day rainfall to less than 10mm the condition would be reduced to condition 1 and would increase by 165.14. If the whole area were a well-kept golf course the runoff would be less due to the increased vegetation and penetrability of the soil on the golf course grounds Discussion These results do seem to be in the acceptable range for the values previously calculated in the class. The values and deduction found for the supplementary questions are also in line with my fellow classmate's answers and appear to be accurate. Conclusion Overall this lab was a great introduction to the idea of runoff and the associated calculations that come with the topic. This lab taught the valuable skills to calculate runoff with a given set of variables for any condition in the world.
