In this discussion, you are to critically evaluate the following scenario based on what you’ve learned about Redox Chemistry in this module. A salesman claims that your tap water is contaminated. As evidence, he connects a battery to a pair of “special electrodes” and dips the electrodes in a glass of your tap water. Within a few minutes, white and brown “gunk” appears in the water. The salesman sells a special purifying filter that he claims will remove the contaminants and leave the water pure and clear. Are you buying it? Explain. Once you have completed your initial post, read the postings of at least two of your fellow classmates and respond by asking a clarifying question, critiquing their assessment of the statement, or giving other constructive comments about their initial posting. I expect that your comments will be substantive - not just "it’s a good point" or similar statements. This discussion is worth 15 points and will be evaluated using the CHEM 104 Discussion Rubric . This rubric is available under the Grading Information tab of the Discussion area, as well as in the course Grade Center. I would not buy the water from the salesman unless he has solid evidence that my water is contaminated and also if he can prove that his product works or not. The demonstration from the salesman was not evidence that the water is contaminated because the battery could have caused a redox reaction in the water to make it look that color when in reality, it is clean. I would need him to show me other ways that the water is contaminated. Therefore, I would most likely not buy the salesman's product.
