Instructions: Upload your work on this page to Brightspace by typing or writing your responses
and saving the file AS A PDF FILE with your first and last name and uploading that file. You can
also take pictures of your written work and paste them in!

Pages, HEIC, or docx!
Learning Objectives
2.6
– Describe how the formula for a molecular compound describes its composition.
2.7 – Identify and name ions found in ionic compounds.
2.7 – Describe how the formula for an ionic compound describes its composition.
Consider the following ionic compounds: NaCl, AlBr
3
, Ca(NO
3
)
2
, and NH
4
SO
4
1.
Claim (2 pts):
Which chemical formula(s) is/are incorrect?
Write your claim as a sentence,
not just the chemical formula.
The chemical formula that is incorrect is “ NH
4
SO
4
” because
this formula is known as
Ammonium Sulfate.
2.
Evidence (4 pts): Use your observations and scientific principles – what is incorrect about
the chemical formula and why? Hint:
You need at least 3 pieces of evidence!
This formula is for Ammonium Sulfate should, a combination of Ammonium NH
4
+
and Sulfate SO
4
2-
. The use of NH
4
and SO
4
are slightly correct but in combining the two, a
few components are missing such as “
2
”. There also needs to be a change of charge from the
sulfate ion, the -2 needs to be changed to a positive when combining the two. Lastly, the NH
4
needs to be isolated in parenthesis.
3.
Reasoning (4 pts.) : Connect your evidence to your claim
and use scientific principle(s),
EXPLAIN why the formula you have chosen is incorrect!
Hints:
1.
Write the claim as your first sentence.
a.
The formula for Ammonium Sulfate is incorrect because 2 positive charges were
not added to Sulfate to balance out the formula.
2.
Second sentence – describe how one piece of evidence from #2 supports or justifies the
claim.
a.
When 2 positive charges are added
(NH
4
)
2
, the charges are able to balance the
chemical formula to have a net charge of zero.
3.
Third sentence - describe how another piece of evidence from #2 supports or justifies the
claim.
a.
After the positive charge is added to the outside of Ammonium, the
2-
must be
removed so it resembles the final formula.
4.
Continue writing sentences until you use up all the evidence you’ve cited.
a.
The product of this formula would end up being (NH
4
)
2
SO
4
5.
Write a concluding sentence.
Although the Formatting for NH
4
SO
4
is close to the end product, there needs to be an
addition of 2 added to the outside of NH
4
to show how the chemical became neutralized,
therefor the correct format would be (NH
4
)
2
SO
4
.
In paragraph from.
The formula for Ammonium Sulfate provided was written as NH
4
SO
4
, which is
incorrect because 2 positive charges were not added to Sulfate to show the balance in the
formula. When 2 positive charges are added
(NH4)
2
, the charges are able to balance
the chemical formula to have a net charge of zero. After the positive charge is added to
the outside of Ammonium, the 2- must be removed so it resembles the final formula. The
product of this formula would be (NH
4
)
2
SO
4
. Although the formatting for NH
4
SO
4
is
close to the end product, there needs to be an addition of 2 added to the outside of NH
4
to
show how the chemical became neutralized, therefore, the correct format would be
(NH
4
)
2
SO
4
.

Write the chemical formulas for the products formed when each of the following hydrocarbons undergoes complete combustion.
For each part, there are two answers. Input one chemical formula in each blank. Order doesn't matter.
Do NOT
include equation coefficients, ONLY the two products
When typing a compound formula, use an underscore "_" to depict a subscript
for example for K2CO3 you would type K_2CO_3
