SCI 100 Module Six Activity Template: Science in the Real World Instructions First, choose one video from the module resources to watch. You should use points made in the video you chose, and any other course resources, to support your responses to the questions below. Replace the bracketed text with your responses. Apply the scientific lens to a personal experience or event. One specific example in which I applied the scientific lens was using reusable bags to offset their environmental impact on animals. I wanted to help reduce our environmental imprint after learning about plastic's devastation to our species from my son's Science project on pollution, such as suffocating sea turtles who mistake it for jellyfish while looking for food (McGimpsey, n.d.). With this knowledge, we and other students who lived in our community reserved a day to clean up the local beach of surrounding litter. While government officials and human society has known for fifty years of the warning of climate change crisis, we can no longer depend on economic growth, yet choose how we will react in fear but respond by becoming growing scientifical literacy and allowing scientific knowledge to influence our decision to combat the climate control crisis. While government leaders and human society have been warned for years about the dangers of climate change, we can no longer rely on economic growth to solve our problems, which scientists have identified as the root of the problem (Gilding, 2012). But we may choose not to react in fear but instead to respond by increasing our scientific literacy and enabling scientific understanding to influence our choice to tackle the climate change catastrophe. Explain the value of being a scientifically informed citizen within your community. The benefit of being a scientifically informed citizen is that it allows each to make an informed decision based on the knowledge gained from scientific analytical scientific research. The improved knowledge received will allow citizen scientists to conduct innovative ways to reduce economic growth with the Earth already reaching its maxed capacity or conduct further research to become more knowledgeable ( Gilding, 2012 ). Overall, being a scientifically informed citizen opens opportunities to engage with the gained knowledge and adjust their practical habits that would benefit the earth, especially concerning the climate change crisis. Discuss the obligation of citizens to be scientifically literate and how that could affect global contemporary issues. It is imperative for people to be scientifically educated to leave a better planet for our next and future generations. Furthermore, it reduces the number of species going extinct due to human civilization's disregard for climate change warning signals. Without societal involvement, a population will become even more enraged, questioning why this has occurred (Gilding, 2012). Therefore, we should become scientifically literate to grasp the world we live in and improve our quality of life. The more informed we are by credible scientific research, the better we can partner with reducing economic resources and do something as small as picking up litter,
recycling, or partnering with organizations that do storm art drain projects to educate their communities regarding litter impact. References Gilding, P. (2012, February). The Earth is full [Video].
