OVERVIEW Fuel cells are powered by one of the most abundant elements – hydrogen. In a hydrogen fuel cell, hydrogen reacts electrochemically to produce electricity. A hydrogen fuel cell has a construction like a battery, in that the hydrogen enters the anode, where it meets a catalyst that promotes the separation of hydrogen atoms into electrons and protons. These protons pass through the electrolyte to the cathode, while the electrons are forced to flow through the circuit, thence generating the electric current. The electrons and protons combine with oxygen from the air at the cathode, producing water and heat. Water is then expelled, and this cycle is repeated. ADVANTAGES/ DISADVANTAGES OF HFC Environmental implications of using hydrogen fuel cells are both positive and negative. Should hydrogen fuel cells be used as a standard battery, some positive implications are reduced greenhouse gas, but at the expense of a high cost and incomplete infrastructure. Environmental implications mainly depend on how the hydrogen is produced, as the efficiency of the system and safe waste management and storage of hydrogens. Further research needs to be done into optimizing hydrogen product and storage in a clean and efficient manner, which would reduce cost of production and maintenance. Overall, hydrogen fuel cells present a clean, and renewable battery source, with minimal waste products. Further research into minimizing cost of producing these cells needs to be done, and necessary infrastructure would need to be built to present it as an enticing alternative as batteries. ADVANTAGES/ DISADVANTAGES OF HFC Some advantages of the hydrogen fuel cell is that it is an efficient, renewable energy cell. Since the cell only produces water and heat as by-products, it is a relatively clean source of energy. Since hydrogen can be produced using other renewable energy sources, the hydrogen fuel cell can be said to be a renewable and sustainable energy source. Disadvantages of the hydrogen fuel cells are that it is more expensive that traditional batteries, including the cost of production and storage of hydrogen. Furthermore, there is currently inadequate infrastructure available for producing, storing, distributing of hydrogen, and this limitation results in inaccessibility of the cell technology. More importantly, hydrogen in a fuel cell prompts safety concerns, due to it being a flammable gas. Research
