1. Summarize the observations you made when you observed the intersecting circles and when you began to explore other pens, etc. Be specific since this is the basis of the rationale for the experiment you designed. Your descriptions of your observations will show your thought process. (4 pts.) During the experiment the termites preferred to follow the black PaperMate pen line over the bic pen and the other pens we had tried. No matter the shape of the line they preferred the Papermate, they even traced over the words written in the black Papermate ink. 2. What was your research question? (2 pt.) The question that my group was trying to answer, does the color of the pen change the line the termites follow. Meaning, if we change out the bic pen with a purple Papermate pen would the termites still prefer the black Papermate or would they not care and they just preferred the brand. 3. Write out your hypothesis. Make sure that it is falsifiable, testable, and is based upon your observations. Include your predictions. (3 pts.) If termites follow the PaperMate black line and we place the termites in the circles of the black and colored ink, then the termites will follow to the black PaperMate line. Our predictions being the termites will prefer the black line over the colored no matter the brand seeing as though the Papermate is the correct shade that the termites will follow. 4. Use complete sentences/paragraphs to describe your experimental design. Include descriptions of your independent variables, dependent
variables, controls, constants, and replication. Use complete sentences/paragraphs to explain how you set up and carried out your experiment. Use enough detail that someone could replicate your experiment if they desired. (5 pts.) In this experiment we will Draw two circles that overlap in the middle one circle black PaperMate the other Purple PaperMate. Place 2 termites in the middle of the diagram and observe what the termites follow and for how long to falsify or support our hypothesis. We will be measuring the line the termites spend the most time on. Our dependent variable is the amount of time each of the termites spend on each line, our independent variable is the purple PaperMate line because we are changing this variable whereas the black PaperMate pen is controlled since it is staying consistent through the whole experiment. 5. Summarize and describe the results of your experiment using complete sentences/paragraphs. Include an image of a graph and/or table that shows your results, including average values (not just raw data). (5 pts.) During this experiment the termites always followed the black line and never gave any attention to the purple line.
6. Draw conclusions. Indicate whether your hypothesis was supported or refuted. Using complete sentences/paragraphs, provide evidence from the data you collected to support your conclusions. (3 pts.) This experiment supports our hypothesis with the results being the termites seemed to follow the black PaperMate line over the purple PaperMate line and ignored the purple line almost completely. More than 50% of the time the termites spent their time on the black PaperMate line so we can infer that our hypothesis is supported that the termites prefer the black PaperMate line.

7. Given more time, supplies, termites, etc., what would be your next steps? Describe any new hypotheses, future directions, modified experiments, etc. (3 pts.) If I had more time and materials the first thing I would do would be to create a bigger experiment while using markers of all different colors to test the theory of the line thickness. Hypothesis: If the termites follow the skinny black line and we mark thicker lines then the termites will most likely continue to follow the line that is skinnier.
