Instructions: Answer the following questions for each of the 10 objectives listed below. 1. Check to see if any 'rules for objectives' are being violated. Clearly state any rule that has been violated. (1 point) 2. Identify the level(s) of blooms taxonomy the objective is targeting. (1 point) 3. Rewrite the objective so that no rules are being violated. Explain why you made the changes you did. (1 points) Objectives: 1. Describe and create a marketing plan for your organization 1. This objective is not measurable. It also uses two action verbs “describe” and “create” which are from two different categories; “Knowledge” and “Create.” 2. The levels of Bloom’s taxonomy that the objective is targeting is “Create” because the purpose is asking for something new to be created. 3. Create a 1-month marketing plan for your organization. I made these changes because the objective needed to only include on verb from the action verb list, and it needed to be measurable. I included that the plan should outline one month so that there was less variance in the responses. 2. Become familiar with the elements of editing 1. The objective is not clear on what the ultimate goal is. There is not an effective action verb included and this objective is not measurable. 2. The level that this objective is targeting is “Understand” because although the purpose is not specific, we can identlify that it is asking for something to be understood. 3. Interpret the elements of editing. I chose to use the verb interpret because the objective should be for students to understand the elements of editing so that they can apply it to their writing. Additionally, I think this makes the objective measurable because now it is clear that students should be able to apply it to their own work.
3. Complete the assignment 1. The objective is not clear because the assignment is not expressed in the phrase. We are unsure what steps will be taken in this assignment and it is not completely clear what level of taxonomy this falls under 2. It’s not clear which category of the taxonomy pyramid this falls under because it can be interpreted into any of the levels. 3. Demonstrate your understanding. I chose to use the verb demonstrate because it helps students understand what they are trying to accomplish. I also used the word understanding because it makes it more obvious that this falls under the “apply” level of the pyramid. 4. Identify, describe, and design a lesson plan 1. There are too many action verbs included in this objective, there should only be one to make it clear. 2. This falls under the “create” level of the pyramid because the objective’s purpose is to make something new that outlines understanding. 3. Create a lesson plan. This objective is much clearer because it uses an over- arching goal for the students to accomplish that encompasses all the verbs used in the initial objective. It is measurable, concise, and uses one action verb. 5. Understand the scientific method 1. This objective is not measurable because how are we going to ensure that the scientific method is understood? 2. This objective falls under the “understand” level of the pyramid because as the verb in the phrase shows, the purpose is for something to be understood. 3. Explain the scientific method. I chose to use the verb explain because it still falls under the “understand” level, but it is more clear about what the goal is. “Explain” creates a measurable objective because if students can explain the scientific method, they obviously understand it.
6. Identify the 3 most common ecological theories in writing using 12 point font found in one of 7 textbooks provided to you at the beginning of class without using internet sources or peer support 1. This objective is not concise. It uses too many verbs and has too much detail for just an objective. 2. This falls under the “understand” level of the pyramid because the verb “identify” is connected with the purpose that students need to express understanding. 3. Identify the 3 most common ecological theories. I shortened the objective because it led with only using one action verb, it is clear, and it is measurable. Cutting out details that should be later included in instructions makes this objective concise. 7. Be given opportunities to learn effective communication skills 1. The objective does not start with an action verb, therefore it is not clear or measurable. 2. This falls under the “analyze” level of the pyramid because the objective is discussing how the student will be taught about effective communication skills. The student will be learning and analyzing this subject. 3. Indicate effective communication skills. I added the verb “indicate” at the beginning of the objective because it shows purpose and clarity. The objective now has a goal attached to it and can be measured. 8. Have a deeper appreciation for good communication practices 1. This objective is not measurable and does not lead with a singular action verb to demonstrate a goal. 2. This falls under the “evaluate” category in the pyramid because it shows that the student should appreciate the content, and therefore they need to evaluate it. 3. Distinguish good communication practices. This is a better fit objective because it is clear what the goal is with a leading singular action verb. This is also now

measurable because we can tell if a student can or can’t distinguish subject matter. 9. Describe immigration history 1. The objective is not clear or measurable because it is not specific. Description is a vague topic that does not allow a student to reach a specific result. 2. This falls under the “understand” level of the pyramid because the purpose of the objective is to show understanding for immigration history. 3. Outline immigration history. This is a better fit objective because it shows a more clear goal. Describing things is more of a category and not as specific as outlining. This goal will help an instructor understand what a student knows. 10. Generate a list of 3 physics theories that are in conflict with quantum mechanics with 100% accuracy by 11:59PM today 1. This objective is not concise because it goes on to explain directions that do not belong in the objective. 2. This falls under the “apply” level of the pyramid because the goal is to take what a student knows and format it physically to demonstrate knowledge. 3. Compose a list of 3 physics theories in conflict with quantum mechanics. This is a better objective because it is shorter and more concise. It is also more clear with less unnecessary details and a more specific action verb.
