SCH4U Unit 1 Assessment Unit 1 Assessment for Feedback and Grading Student name: _____________________________ Date: ___________________ This is an Assessment for feedback and grading
, which is used to evaluate your work based on established criteria and to assign a mark. Your teacher will provide you with feedback and a mark which is worth 10% of your final grade. Unit Level / Mark Percentage of final grade 1 _______ / 25 _______ / 10% Instructions: 1. Read each question carefully. 2. Answer each question, showing all your work for any calculations. 3. Answer questions using full sentences unless instructed otherwise Answer the following questions in the space provided. Part marks will be awarded for partial answers. GOOD LUCK! Curriculum Expectation B2
. investigate organic compounds and organic chemical reactions, and use various methods to represent the compounds. 1. Name the following compounds. Where necessary use E/Z notation. (1 mark each) Copyright © 2020 The Ontario Educational Communications Authority. All rights reserved.

SCH4U Unit 1 Assessment 2. Draw the following compounds (1 mark each): a. 2-ethoxybutane b. 3-aminohexane Curriculum Expectation B3
. demonstrate an understanding of the structure, properties, and chemical behaviour of compounds within each class of organic compounds. 1. Can a geometric isomer be created from butane? With the use of a diagram, demonstrate how it can or cannot be formed. (2 marks) 2. Circle the two structures that are structural isomers of each other. (1 mark) Copyright © 2020 The Ontario Educational Communications Authority. All rights reserved. O NH
2
Geometric isomers cannot be created from butane because it has double bonds between carbon atoms, whereas butane requires single bond to connect the carbon atoms together. From the diagram below, we can see that butane consist of single bonds, and there is no presence of double bonds that allow the formation of geometric isomers.

SCH4U Unit 1 Assessment 3. Which of the following would you expect to have the higher boiling point? Explain why. (3 marks –
1 for the answer, 2 for the explanation) 4. Below is a primary alcohol or and an aldehyde (of same carbon length). Which is more likely to be soluble in water? Explain. (2 marks) Copyright © 2020 The Ontario Educational Communications Authority. All rights reserved. 1-propanol would have the highest boiling point. Basing our reasoning from the concept of intermolecular forces and hydrogen bond, 1-propanol is the only one with existing hydrogen bonds due to the presence of hydrogen and oxygen present in the compound. Hydrogen bonds forms the highest intermolecular forces and thus it may require a lot of heat to break the molecules. The higher the intermolecular forces, the higher the boiling point. The first compound is alcohol (1-propanol), while the second one is aldehyde (propionaldehyde). Aldehyde is more soluble in water because it lacks hydrogen bonds. It has dipole forces that makes its bonds lest stronger compared to alcohol which has more stronger molecules due to the presence of hydrogen bonds. Since the forces present in propionaldehyde are less strong, its molecules takes less time to break thus, it is more soluble in water.

A friend of yours went panning for gold last weekend and found a nugget
that appears to be gold. With your newfound scientific prowess, you set out
to determine if it is really gold. Your tests show that the nugget has a mass
of 7.6 g. Immersing the nugget in water raised the volume from 7.22 mL to
8.06 mL. The density of gold is 19.32 g/cm3. What will you tell your friend?

Instructions You are required to produce a short lab report using the information given in the accompanying document, ‘Lab report assessment_student data’. This document introduces an experiment, and also provides a set of experimental data for this experiment. You are required to use this data to perform steps 8 and 9 of the procedure. This includes calculations of a particular value, and then comparison to the true value. Consider any experimental errors when comparing calculated values and true values. Your report should be between 300 and 500 words (including all table contents and titles of tables and graphs). Your lab report should consist of three sections only: • Experimental • Results and Discussion • Conclusion You do NOT need to include an introduction section. Your experimental section should be written in appropriate lab report format, (passive voice, 3 rd person, in paragraphs). Your results and discussion section should contain the data presented in table format, and…
