Introduction Agriculture has been around for thousands of years, and to this day is one of the most
reliable ways to obtain the correct foods for a healthy diet. It has had to evolve to sustain for an
exponential growth of the human population, making it that more important to increase crop yields
while also having a shorter growing season. Though this may seem intriguing to the consumer,
industrial farming methods has extremely detrimental effects on biodiversity, and on the soil itself.
These methods have been by far the most efficient way of obtaining large amounts of food in a short
amount of time, but if one starts to consider the problems that industrial farming causes from a
biodiversity and economic standpoint, new environmentally friendly solutions will have to be
perused in the future to maintain a healthy population worldwide. To be able to start a field for
growing crops to support large amounts of people, a field must be bought from a previous owner or
a new field has to be made. In the US however, it is not uncommon for retired farmers to lend their
land or sell it to new generations, keeping forested areas intact. On the other hand, According to

The topic that I chose to focus on for my research paper is on the practices used in both organically
and conventionally grown foods. More specifically, I focus on the sustainability of the two different
methods and whether or not one is more sustainable than the other in terms of soil health and crop
output/production. The question that I asked in order to help develop my research is "Is organic
farming more sustainable and healthy than conventional farming methods?" My stance on the matter
is that organic farming methods are not only healthier than conventional methods but they are also
more sustainable for future farming. Before reading my research paper, my readers will have to
understand the different farming techniques and methods used in both conventional and organic
farming. They will also need to know the types of pesticides used during both practices and whether
or not these pesticides and chemicals are harmful to the human body. This can be best explained by
Paul Maders article "Soil Fertility and Biodiversity in Organic Farming." In this article he discusses
the farming methods used in organic foods and conventional foods. This article also discusses the
nutritional difference between the two types of growing foods and effect that both have on soil, crop
yields and biodiversity within organic farms. This article helps the reader to understand the process
in which these two different methods produce food and the many factors that go into the production
of both.

The fertility of soil is dependent on the amount of topsoil which contains most of the nutrients and
organic matter. Erosion leads to runoff that washes away the topsoil and organic matter forcing
farmers to use synthetic nitrogen fertilizers to increase the soils fertility. The runoff then carries
these fertilizers and other dangerous chemicals which can contaminate local bodies of water.
Synthetic fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides cannot be used in organic agriculture so organic
fertilizers such as manure and compost and natural processes are used for soil management. Some
organic soil management techniques include mulching, cover cropping and crop rotation. According
to Scialabba, using these techniques will "improve soil structure and therefore increase the soil's
water infiltration and retention capacity, substantially reducing the risk of erosion" (34). The use of
organic fertilizers and less erosion means that the soil on organic farms has more topsoil and organic
matter making them more fertile and better for the environment.
Biodiversity is essential to environmental health because it ensures sustainability and there are many
free biological benefits that can be gained from a large variety of species. Biodiversity creates
sustainable agriculture because it allows the system to perform independently of external recourses.

Many consumers and farmers have discovered that living in an industrialized culture where the
focus has become faster, bigger, and cheaper is not the best way to produce our food. Obsessed with
productivity, the agriculture industry is reaping the negative consequences of creating an
unsustainable environment for food production. Time and time again, the media captures stories
regarding deadly bacterial contamination and dangerous pesticide contamination causing illness and
death in our communities. The environment is also damaged and contaminated. This devastating
trend, due to irresponsible farming practices as a result of the industrialization of the food industry,

As the soil becomes more and more polluted with these toxins, it becomes unsustainable. Therefore,
land that would have remained fertile for centuries through the commonsense farming of our
ancestors, is being ruined by farming controlled by big corporations whose sole interest is in
immediate short term profit (Goodall 38). Industrialized livestock farming with thousands of
animals crammed into small factory spaces is responsible for numerous bacterial and viral infections
such as E.coli., Avian bird flu, Mad cow disease, Salmonella, and many more. Therefore,
conventional farmers use antibiotics to keep these animals alive. This over use of antibiotics is
causing the creation of new, resistant strains of deadly diseases that kill people and animals. Disease
is actually caused by the bad practices, shortcuts, and antibiotic resistance. This has the opposite
effect of what was intended and also costs farmers millions of dollars every year instead of saving
money. Unfortunately, conventional agriculture experts recommend these monocultural farming
practices in the name of quick, mass production. Current conventional farming practices are also
responsible for many pollution problems that would not exist otherwise. The land where we live and
grow our food, the water we drink, and the air we breathe are all being contaminated. The large

Organic Farming Literature Review
Research shows strengths and weaknesses in the organic supply chain that causes problems in
getting products to consumers and meeting consumer demands. Other research indicates the
importance in educating consumers in the organic processes to reduce concern of quality and safety
issues and increase consumer knowledge that differentiates the organic products from any other
product. Some research examines the quality and safety risks that indicate that best practices in
organic farming needs to be considered, while still other research has examined the expectations and
perceptions from consumers regarding organic products. There are techniques that research has
proven that will shift the seasons of organic products to widen the window of opportunity for
organic farmers and other techniques that are alternatives to increase best practices to reduce risks of
disease in organic products.
Local organic farmers need opportunity to sell products year round. A plan is being proposed to
implement a better advertising system of posters and mailings to consumers as well as a Facebook
website where consumers can order and pay for products. The webpage would also include
education links to educate the consumer on the benefits of consuming organic products. The plan
will consist of a central warehouse for organic product distribution to create a better shopping
experience that would provide a faster, more efficient service and higher profitability

The principles of organic agriculture
Australian Organic Farming and Gardening Society published the first series of principles on
organic agriculture around in 1944–1955. As time went by, the significance of organic agriculture
has been found, IFOAM (International Federation of Organic Farm Movements) came up with
organic agriculture principles in 2005 in order to strengthen a bond to reach win–win situation
eventually between ecology and consumers. Theses four principles of organic agriculture are
underlying: The Principle of Health, The Principle of Ecology, The Principle of Fairness and The
Principle of Care, which all emphasize the friendly relationship between ecology and consumers.
This paper will explain the principles of organic agriculture and describe their applications. It will
then evaluate the contribution of organic agriculture to ecology and consumers. "The principle of
health: Organic Agriculture should sustain and enhance the health of soil, plant, animal, human and
planet as one and indivisible." (IFOAM,2005)
Human beings cannot be separated from the ecology, hence health of human beings are included in
health of ecology. Health not only means without illness but also includes that "maintenance of

Organic vs. Conventional Farming Essay
Organic farming is becoming an increasingly popular market throughout the world. (Adam, 2004, p.
666). The aims of organic farming are, to decrease pollution, maintain soil fertility and biodiversity,
be more sustainable, and have increased nutritional benefits than conventionally grown foods
(Yaping et. al., 2003, p. 298). While the aim of conventional farming is to provide safe, proficient
supplies of food, in abundance and at low prices (Trewavas, 2001, p.409). Since 1996, the amount
of land in the UK dedicated to organic farming has risen tenfold (Adam, 2004, p. 666). As well,
from 1992 to 1997, the amount of certified organic cropland in the US more than doubled (Tafel et
al, 2007, p.182 ). The main difference between organic and

(Trewavas, 2001, p.409). This evidence shows that the use of the synthetic pesticides, herbicides,
and fungicides, is beneficial from a food safety point of view, as they decrease the possibility of
getting ill from the consumption of this food. Therefore, conventionally grown food is safer than
organically grown food, which does not use these chemicals.
One concern about pesticides and herbicide usage is the amount of residues left on the end product
of crops sprayed with the chemicals, and their effects on human health. (Williamson, 2007, p. 184).
However, these effects are closely tested and levels are strictly regulated to ensure there is no danger
from possible pesticide residues. Since 1910, many rules, regulations, and agencies have been
formed to monitor the safety of the pesticides and herbicides used in conventional farming. These
chemicals must meet specific safety standards in order to be registered for use, and regulations on
levels of each product safe for use are also put in place. (Tafel et al.,2007, p.184). All pesticides are
rigorously examined to ensure they have no significant effects on human health, or the environment.
The residues in the food chain are closely monitored, and regularly tested, to ensure they are below
