SNM1 Task 1: Analyze Emerging Learning Technology Trend Of Emerging Learning Technology: Artificial Intelligence Artificial Intelligence, more commonly referred to as AI, is gaining traction by the day, from students using it to write essays to teachers using it to create lesson materials for the classroom. Artificial Intelligence refers to the use of technology software to perform tasks in place of things that have previously required human intelligence. There are currently educators that are embracing this new technology and are excited about all the possibilities it will provide while others are hesitant to accept it. John Faig, from a recent PLN discussion board provided an excellent explanation that perfectly depicts the dichotomy that face this emerging technology when he wrote, I'm an optimist and so I think AI assistants will become widespread and specialized to help make people more productive. My only worry is that engineering more productive prompts helps make the AI more productive at a faster rate than my productivity improves.” Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Teaching The biggest impact that Artificial Intelligence can have regarding teaching is the potential it has to allow educators to become much more productive. One obstacle education professionals face is time; there never seems to be enough time to accomplish everything. Teachers are being forced to work beyond contract hours to try to stay caught up on grading, lesson planning, analyzing student data, etc. AI can speed up the lesson planning process with software that allows teachers to put in standards and objectives then providing them with lesson ideas, DOK questions, and much more within
SNM1 Task 1: Analyze Emerging Learning Technology seconds, and “ automated grading systems are streamlining the grading process for educators” (Davis, 2023) ; processes that could take much more time without the help of this technology. This gives teachers the ability to have more personalized interactions with their students. Potential Impact on Equity and Inclusion Up to this point, the most high-tech way educators have been able to evaluate student learning with technology has been through adaptive assessments. For example, my current district utilizes the NWEA Map Assessment to measure students’ academic growth from the beginning of the year to the end. This assessment evaluates student abilities based on an adaptive scale; meaning for every question they correctly answer, the next will be an academically higher-level question and vice versa. This model has its benefits for some students; however, because this system ‘groups’ multiple students within a ‘specific level’, the academic plan for each group is broad and may not pinpoint the specific needs of individual students. Over the years, individualizing lessons has been placed solely on the teacher, and with class-sizes only getting larger, that is becoming a nearly insurmountable feat. Currently, companies are designing standard curriculums that are expected to be used for all and adaptive assessments that can only place students into a certain number of groups based on ability level. According to the Office of Educational Technology, “…traditional curricular resources were designed to teach to the middle or most common learning pathways” (“Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Teaching and

Up to this point, this has been the best practice to provide equitable lessons for all students, but with the emergence of AI, we have the chance to target the needs of students and provide early intervention for those that may have fallen through the cracks in the past.
