If you selected law or graduate school, you will research these options by visiting the websites of a few of the programs you are interested in attending. Answer the following questions about your selected field using this document. 1) What are the training requirements, technical skills, and/ or knowledge requirements for this entry level career? These can be found in an employment advertisement or you may also consult https://www.bls.gov/ooh/. Be sure to use and cite your source. For those who selected law or graduate school, you should list the skills and requirements that you will need to be admitted and be successful in the respective program. The knowledge requirements to obtain an entry level position within The Department of Homeland Security’s is: - A minimum of 3 years full-time general work experience that demonstrates the ability to meet and deal with people and the ability to learn and be able to apply what you have learned; or a bachelor's degree or successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in any field - Firearm proficiency is required and is part of the training provided. - Must serve a one-year probationary period during the first year of your initial permanent Federal appointment. - Required to complete a paid pre-academy orientation for approximately 2 weeks at your home port. You will then attend a 101-day training program conducted at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) located in Glynco, GA. 2) Identify and briefly define, using your own words, 5 attributes that are important to this career? (Strong communication, ethical decision making, conflict resolution, etc.) For those who selected law or graduate school, identify and briefly define, using your own words, 5 qualities that are important for a student who wants to be successful. There is not a right or wrong, it comes down to your judgment on what those are and why. The purpose for the assignment is to have students reflect about the attributes that are important in their selected career path. - Flexible thinking; meaning to think outside the box and view different scenarios from different viewpoints. - Analytical mindset; meaning being able to gather facts and data and connect pieces of information to one another to come to solutions. - Decision-making; being able to make the correct decisions, especially during fast paced periods of time.

List and describe 5 responsibilities/ functions/ duties of someone in this career position. For those who selected law or graduate school, this may not easily parallel. However, attempt to list and describe 5 responsibilities/ functions/ duties that you will perform while enrolled in law or graduate school. 5 responsibilities/functions/duties of someone in this career position include, but are not limited to; - Enforcing customs; meaning to uphold laws and policies of what is required to enter the U.S. - Facilitating the flow of legitimate trade and travel; Allowing the exit and entrance from the U.S. in a timely and peaceful manner. - Conducting inspections of individuals and conveyances; checking each and every person to make sure no contraband or weapons enters the United States. - Determining the admissibility of individuals for entry into the United States; determining who is allowed to enter the U.S. - Preventing the illegal entry of individuals and prohibited goods and the smuggling of illegal drugs and other contraband 4) What types of decisions will a person make in this career on a day-to-day basis? For those who selected law or graduate school, what are the decisions a person who is a full-time student makes on a day-to-day basis while in law or graduate school? - Some decisions a person will make in this entry-level career is when to escalate certain situations, when to enforce certain policies, when to conduct inspections of individuals, decided whether or not to admit individuals into the U.S 5) Who will this person interact with on a typical day in this profession? (Think about interpersonal communication among work-groups, clientele, and the community.) Provide a minimum of three groups/ levels. For those who selected law or graduate school, draw up your
CCJ 3058 Professionalism in CJ and Criminology Individual Reflection #1 experience as a student to identify groups that you will interact with while enrolled in graduate/law school. - A person in this entry-level career field will interact with individuals exiting and entering The United States. 6) What are your strengths, as found by the personality assessments taken during week 1? - Supportive - Reliable - Observant - Enthusiastic - Hardworking - Good practical skills 7) In what ways are your strengths aligned with the career field you selected? - Within this entry level career field I selected, all of these strengths align because, in order to make it in a higher position in DHS, you must be hardworking and determined. Not only this, you must be reliable and observant. In this entry level field, you have to be reliable as the border is a huge defense for the U.S. 8) What are your weaknesses, as found by the personality assessments taken during week 1 ? - Overly humble - Taking things personally - Repressing my feeling - Being reluctant to change - Too altruistic. 9) Of these areas of weakness, which is most important for you to develop in order to be better prepared for a career in the selected field? For those who selected law or graduate school, which weakness is most important for you to develop in order to be better prepared for law or graduate school? - All of my weaknesses, the most important for me to develop in order to be better prepared for a career in DHS is taking things too personally. I need not to take things personally to succeed in DHS simply because I feel it is important to control how others perceive you. Others may not respect you if you show weakness due to taking things personally, no matter how big or small.
