P a g e | 3 Self-assessment: Ranked Lowest Self-assessment As director of leadership and learning at the headquarters for the prosthetics company in Tampa, Florida, I know that improving leadership is something that is consistent and requires continuous learning. Our company was built in 1999 and has since grown from one facility to now, also having three other branches along the southwest. Our next goal over the next few years is to go even further from just the US, but to the Canadian markets. To help improve my own leadership, and better the company and how it operates, I have personally completed the personal leadership self-assessment to get a closer look at my strengths at weaknesses as a leader. After assessing my results, I noticed that my lowest score was two that were tied at 50 points and coincidently, to me, went hand in hand with one another. The first category I had the lowest percentage in, at 44% and 50 points, is enabling others to act. Now I say this goes hand in hand with Challenge the Process because it also is about not taking risks and was tied at 50 points (65%). To me, scoring the lowest in these categories means these are the areas in which I will need the most improvement and focus on to become a better leader. The second category I had the lowest percentage in was challenge the process. This score was low, in my opinion, because I struggle to take risks or seize the opportunity when the opportunity arises. I have always had people pleasing tendencies and will help someone else get things before I will go for things myself. Recognizing your weaknesses and using them to grow is a great step towards being a better leader (From Inspiration to Innovation: How to Challenge the Process, 2021). Self-assessment: Improve Skills Related to Leading Others What this means is that I have areas in need of improvement such as taking risks and speaking up more when I have ideas. This also means if I see an opportunity for growth I will try to take it. Improving these areas will help us become better leaders because not growing as a leader can

So, in improving Challenge the process, I will be a better leader because I will allow myself more opportunities to grow, while when I improve Enabling Others to Act, will encourage others to grow and become better leaders. Self-assessment: Ranked Highest Now that we have discussed the lowest-ranking category, I want to discuss which category I ranked highest in. This was the Model the Way category at 57 points and 90%. I enjoyed learning about Modeling the Way and how important it is to leadership. When you Model the Way, you are expressing your values while being able to come together and create a shared value from the employees around you (Exemplary Leadership Starts with You, 2021). Doing so allows a common ground within the organization as well as allowing them to see that you mean what you say. As stated in “The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership: How ordinary people make extraordinary things happen,” a leader cannot have expectations of others until they have discovered and set our own values and personal expectations (Kouzes & Posner, 2013). This is especially important in my role as Director, and I say this because I have many people under me as well as above me. I cannot expect those colleagues who look for my guidance to follow a set of values that I do not understand or follow. This would also show those above me that my leadership is not where it should be for my subordinates. Self-assessment: Being an Effective Leader Being an effective leader means you could influence and support those around you (The Program on Negotiation, 2024). Having a good concept of how to Model the way in leadership will help be an effective leader because it will instill motivation throughout a department. If an effective leader believes in the value and success of the company, so will those around them.
P a g e | 5 That is how I try to be with my employees, motivating, supporting, and I always make sure they know they can come to me if there is a problem. Adaptive Leadership Toolkit: Leadership Behaviors After reviewing the Employee Satisfaction Survey, I could see that a lot of the lower leadership behavior scores were in areas of communication and getting to know your team. Improving communication and getting to know the employees and building a better trusting relationship with them is a great way to help in improving not only these areas but will also increase the chances that the issues in the other departments will start to fix themselves, or for better words, the employees will be better learning ways to work things out and communicate issues when things are needed to be communicated. Adaptive Leadership Toolkit: Managing Relationships Now that we have looked at the lowest leadership behaviors, let’s talk about what is currently successful at the company. They currently had higher scores in empathy. I say this because they had higher scores in questions such as “Constantly strives to provide value to our clients and customers,” “My company cares about its customers,” and “In my job I have clearly defined quality goals.” This is a very important leadership tool and will assist in keeping a strong relationship between a leader, such as me, and their direct reports. It also shows they care deeply about their customers and providing them with the best service.
