QSO-321-H5549 Professor Joseph Scullion Southern New Hampshire University May 29, 2022 4-3 Assignment- Project Management Strategies Lean Manufacturing After evaluating the NationaliTeas process flowchart, I think the steps that do not add value based on the principles of lean manufacturing are: 1. The reweighting of the bags of tea: I believe there's no need for the company to weigh the bags of tea six times. We can remove some of those steps and only do it twice. For example, we can keep the initial weighing "Leaves are put into 50 kg bags" and the final weighing for packing and shipping. 2. Unnecessary duplicate work: Looking at the process flowchart, we can see a repetition of steps "Leaves are visually inspected" and "Poor-quality leaves are thrown away". I believe we can remove these steps since we already did them in the previous step "Leaves are removed from trays and reweighed; poor-quality leaves are thrown away". Sustainability The steps that should be removed or changed to improve environmental sustainability are:
1. Non-ecofriendly material- "The cardboard packs with the tea bags are sealed and wrapped in plastic" The company should switch to eco-friendly material to improve environmental sustainability. According to the Green-Processing Company Inc. by switch to eco-friendly material the company will save raw materials, manufacturing energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. 2. Tea Bags- Evaluating the process flowchart, I could see the company uses a lot of plastic in its production. Plastic causes harm to the environment, and it can cause health issues to our customers too. I believe the company should switch to plastic-free teabags. Process Changes Following my advice in removing or changing the steps from the process flowchart that I identified in the previous two bullet points can cause positive and negative impact in the company. The positive is that the company will reduce waste and be more efficient and effective. The negative is that the company can lose profits and customers by switching to plastic-free. To cover the cost of becoming sustainable, the company may raise the price of its products. Although in the long run implementing those changes will benefit the company as more people buy more environmentally friendly products. Also, those changes would help align to the triple bottom line as NationaliTeas shift their focus on the impact of its operation on people and the planet. Issue Log
1. General Confusion- The best thing to do regarding this issue is to set up a meeting with each stakeholder and discuss their level of decision-making power, involvement, and scheduling of major project milestones. Communication is the key to success. Everyone should be aware of the company goals and what we expect from them. 2. New packaging- Since the stakeholders are the ones investing in the company, I believe every business should take their recommendations into count in some way, although in this case, they shouldn't. The shiny foil packaging can be attractive to some customers, but it doesn't align with the company goals. The company wants to become more sustainable, and foil packaging is not eco-friendly. 3. Triple the project budget- Triple the project budget to study   compostable packaging materials sounds like a good idea since they align with the company's goals. Although, I would require a meeting with the department so they can explain their plan and how they pretend to use those funds. If it makes sense, I will allow it. Operations Management Techniques Operations management techniques can add a lot of value to NationaliTeas. The goal of operation management is to get the most out of a company’s resources (Sweet Process, n.d.). In other words, operation management increases profits while reducing costs and ensuring maximum productivity. As the company tries to become sustainable, project management becomes crucial. It will help the team be more organized, keep track, and be more effective. And
