Forensic Data Linda Moody University of Phoenix AJS/587 Leonald Robinson March 25, 2024 Forensic Data
Because the world is becoming more and more digitally connected, forensic data uses technological processes to assist in the analysis, collection, and sharing of evidence kept on any electronic device ("Coursera", 2023). The field of statistics in science is concerned with creating and understanding procedures for obtaining, classifying, interpreting, and presenting factual data ("UCI", 2023). The data and categories of cybercrime that were documented throughout the 2020 pandemic. The Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) was notified of a greater number of complaints and financial losses in 2016 than it was in 2020. This comparison can be made. We'll also contrast and talk about the top five categories of crimes that occurred between 2016 and 2020. There are four main COVID-19 cybercrimes and a description of how they ought to be properly handled. Finally, a quick explanation of the Business Email Compromise (BEC) and how it might be better addressed, along with the roles played by the members of the IC3 Recovery Asset Team (IC3 RAT) will be addressed in this report. Data and Categories of Cybercrimes In the United States in 2020, there were various different kinds of cybercrimes that were reported. Let's talk about each of these individually. Phishing, phishing, vishing, and smishing are techniques primarily used to obtain an individual's online banking information. Phishing involves sending an email correspondence, while smishing involves sending an SMS message. Pharming, on the other hand, is carried out online by surreptitiously directing people to a third-party website (Efimenko, 2018). 07% of Americans were impacted by these kinds of cybercrimes.
A personal data breach occurs when there is a security breach that allows for the accidental or unlawful destruction, loss, alteration, unlawful access to, or disclosure of confidential data. This can lead to discrimination, reputational damage, financial loss, and invasion of privacy ("ICO", n.d.). In 2020,.01% of Americans had a personal data breach (Abbate, n.d.). Identity theft is the unlawful use of another person's name, credit card information, or social security number to perpetrate fraudulent acts. This kind of cybercrime is impacted.01% of Americans in 2020 (Abbate, n.d.) & the "Consumer Financial Protection Bureau," 2017). In addition to these, a number of other cybercrimes were also reported in 2020. This included credit card fraud, business email compromise, and email account compromise, which affected.005% of Americans, corporate data breaches, which affected.008%, and malware, viruses, and scarware, which affected.0004% of Americans. Comparing the Number of Financial Losses with the Number of Complaints According to Abbate, there were cybercrimes that cost $1.5 billion in 2016. Of those billions of dollars, 298,728 people received a financial loss. But in 2020, these figures jumped by 38% because 791,790 people were impacted by digital crimes, resulting in losses of $4.2 billion (Abbate, n.d.). Comparing the Top Five Categories of Crime Over the course of the four years, there was a total 1140% increase in this form of crime (phishing, veiling, smishing, and pharmacing) (Abbate, n.d.). There was a 30% increase from 2016 to 2017, a 4% increase from 2017 to 2018, a 335% increase from 2018 to 2019, and a 110% increase from 2019 to 2020 (Abbate, n.d.).

The percentage of non-payment/non-delivery cases increased by 34% during the course of the four years (Abbate, n.d.). There was a 3.8% increase in 2016–2017, a 23% decline in 2017–2018, a 5% decrease in 2018–2019, and a 76% increase in 2019–2020 (Abbate, n.d.). Extortion saw a 348% increase over the course of the four years (Abbate, n.d., p. 6). There was a 13% reduction in 2016–2017, a 242% increase in 2017–2018, a 16% decrease in 2018–2019, and a 78% increase in 201–2020 (Abbate, n.d.). Personal Data Breach: there was a 64% increase over the four years (Abbate, n.d.). The rise was 12% from 2016 to 2017, 64% from 2017 to 2018, 25% from 2018 to 2019, and 19% from 2019 to 2020 (Abbate, n.d.). Identity Theft: there was a 157% increase in identity theft throughout the four-year period (Abbate, n.d.). The years 2016–2017 had a 4% increase, 2017–2018 saw a 9% reduction, 2018–2019 saw a.5% decrease, and 2019– 2020 saw a notable 157% gain (Abbate, n.d.). Significant COVID-19 Cybercrimes Business E-mail Compromise (BEC) is a well-known scam that targets both individuals and businesses that transfer money. In recent years, this kind of crime has evolved to include illegal requests for extremely large amounts of gift cards, spoofing attorney emails, requesting W-2 information, jeopardizing personal and vendor emails, and targeting real estate zones (Abbate, n.d.). About 19,369 complaints totaling losses exceeding $1.8 billion were made in 2020 (Abbate, n.d.). Tech Support Fraud is a scheme where a criminal makes false promises to offer security, technical assistance, or other services in order to deceive unsuspecting people (Abbate, n.d.). In 2020, there were 15,421 complaints totaling losses above
$146 million, with most of the complainants being over 60 (Abbate, n.d.). All computer data is encrypted by ransomware, rendering it unusable in the process. The data is then held hostage until the ransom is paid (Abbate, n.d.). The most common kinds are software vulnerabilities, campaigns, remote desktop protocols, and phishing emails (Abbate, n.d.). The Roles of the IC3 Recovery Asset Team's (IC3 RAT) Constituent Parts. In addition to providing a portal for victims to report online crimes, the IC3 Recovery Asset Team also operates as a Central Hub to alert the public, conducts analysis, handles complaint referrals, and recovers assets. Through the Federal Bureau of Investigations' website, they offer a Remote Access Database to all law enforcement agencies, including local, state, federal, and even international agencies (Abbate, n.d.). With the way that technology is developing every year, it is critical that everyone understands how to safeguard oneself from cybercrimes that could affect them or their companies. To make sure that everyone is aware of the warning signs, training ought to be given to all new hires and then once a year after that. As you can see, there has been a notable growth in cybercrimes over the past four years, and this trend is expected to continue. It is crucial that everyone receives the appropriate training and knowledge regarding these crimes. References What Is Computer Forensics?
