Unilever Vision: “ Our Vision is to deliver winning performance by being the global leader in sustainable business.” Unilever envisions a world where sustainable and responsible business practices are the norm, and they strive to be a leader in driving this positive change (Unilever, 2023). Mission: Unilever's mission is to make sustainable living commonplace. They aim to improve people's health and well-being, reduce environmental impact, and enhance livelihoods through their diverse range of products. Values: Unilever emphasizes on values such as integrity, respect, responsibility, and pioneering spirit in all aspects of their operations. (Unilever, n.d.a) A. Sustainability Practices: Unilever has been a pioneer in sustainability. Through Unilever Sustainable Living Plan (USLP) , the company is committed to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). From 2010 to 2020, some of their key achievements include sending zero non-hazardous waste to landfills from their factories, launching various cruelty-free products and brands, running their operations on 100% renewable energy and more. Furthermore, they are actively working towards achieving additional targets such as transitioning to 100% electric vehicles, adopting 100% recyclable plastic packaging and achieving zero environmental footprint by 2039 among some of their future targets (Unilever, n.d.b). Recently, Unilever encountered investor pressure regarding financial performance and market challenges. Lack of transparency regarding costs and profits from Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) initiatives raises concerns from investors about the business's balance between profitability and value creation. However, the CEO Alan Jope underscores the company's commitment to sustainability, highlighting achievements such as the increased value of Dove soap (Naidu, 2022). Based on their actions, Unilever is a company that actively embodies its mission, vision, and values through the collaborative efforts of its top management and dedicated employees. Unilever aims to be a leader in driving positive change, and this ambition is reflected in the initiatives they undertake to promote sustainability and ethical business practices across the industry.
B. Strategy: The birth of USLP in 2010, gave a clear sustainability trajectory to the company. The strategies used by the company revolves around addressing the commitments they have made in their vision and mission statement, which is to positions itself as a leader in sustainable consumer goods, emphasizing on improving public health, reducing environmental impact, and enhancing livelihoods. What makes Unilever stand out is its aim to go beyond just being sustainable – they want to be a leader. They're not only incorporating sustainability, social responsibility, and ethical values into day-to-day tasks but they want to be identified for it. This commitment sets them apart, showing they're not just talking about it; they're taking real action. C. Effectiveness in Sustainable Business Activity: Unilever is a company that has been committed to sustainability for many years. In fact, they have been recognized as the top-ranked company in the 2022 Dow Jones Sustainability Index and have also been recognized by the United Nations as a leader in Sustainable Business practices (Unilever, n.d.c). No company is perfect and so are some brand & products sold by Unilever (examples: AXE, Sunsilk, Lipton). Additionally, there are areas of conflict (examples: palm oil, animal rights) which the business is trying to solve. But all in all, it is a business in transition with big & serious plans to make their operation and world a more sustainable place slowly. They acknowledge both the risks and opportunities presented by sustainability trends and adapt to them, taking into account the three key aspects: planet, people, and profit. Sustainability matters to everyone in the company, and the leadership ensures that it's woven into every business decision, starting from the top and reaching everyone. D. Desire to be Part of Unilever: Given the dedication and commitment to sustainability and social responsibility coupled with their drive for innovative practices, I would love to be associated with a company who is actively working towards making a positive impact on the future of the planet and global community.
