SWK5026 E-JOURNAL WEEK 3 EMILY WILLIAMS Date: 2024-01-26 Total hours completed this week: 20 Agency/Site name: Bristol Hospice MSW site supervisor: Amanda Beda Course: SWK5026 Summary of experiences this week including client/project assignments completed this week: Complete relias trainings on Hospice coordination of care, abuse prevention, and protecting patient rights. Discuss learning with site supervisor. Learning goals from your learning contract addressed this week (must enter at least 2): Demonstrate professional demeanor in behavior, appearance, and communication Use technology ethically and appropriately to facilitate practice and education. Use supervision to guide professional development and behavior Share the date and length of this week's supervision: 1/26/24 7:30am-8:30am PST How have course discussions and materials been integrated in your practicum experience this week (provide two specific examples): This week following the completion of the relias learning videos, Amanda and I discussed the importance of mandatory reporting and how the process of abuse investigation works with the department of human services. During this we discussed how the way we provide care can adapt and increase due to the suspicion of abuse. Often times in hospice when abuse is suspected the agency will have staff utilize tandem visits to have a witness at all times. In addition to this they will increase the visit frequence to have more eyes on the patient until DHS has determined the threat to be unfound. Identify Social Work Skills/Theory used this week (provide two specific examples): Person in environment. It was discussed the way the environment an individual is in has an effect on their decisions and the way the choose to live. When talking about abuse often times individuals will decline visits or become weary of the number of staff members in their home especially the social worker. This is a defense mechanism and a consequence of their environment. Discuss one application of the NASW Code of Ethics (values, ethical dilemmas, etc.) that was experienced this week: The NASW code of ethics standard discusses the primary responsibility of the social worker being to promote the well-being of the patient. This standard relates to abuse in the responsibility to report if a patient is not safe. We are promoting the wellbeing of a patient by assuring their safety through the use of state and community resources to investigate any concerns for abuse. How did you employ self-awareness, self-care and/or professionalism this week? (Provide a specific example): I continued to make time for myself to do things I enjoy in the evenings. I also took time to relax. Taking on a full time job and being a student has been hard on my mental health and completing selfcare
and checking in with my feelings and emotions has been vital to my success. Competencies used this week: Competency 1 Demonstrate ethical and professional behavior- showing up to work in a professional manner, dressed and ready for the day. Competency 2 Engage Diversity and Difference in Practice- Treating each case individually and meeting individuals where they're at. Competency 6 Engage with individuals and families- during visits and interactions with clients Competency 7 Assess individuals and families Future plans for your continued learning at your placement (provide specific examples): Continue to learn about the ways hospice provides assistance to patients and their families.
