DYS541: Getting Started with Spreadsheet Modeling and Business Analytics Dyson, Cornell SC Johnson College of Business Getting Started with Spreadsheet Modeling and Business Analytics Action Plan Professor Haeger has explained that there are three steps in the data-analytics process, and the first of these is to gather your data. Consider how you will gather your data and towards what end: What are the key business questions you’re hoping to answer? Answer the following questions, using as much space as you need. 1. Describe the key business need you have for analyzing data or the problem you wish to solve. For example, do you hope to more effectively work with your inventory records, customer or guest records, sales data, purchase orders? In 2023 our company hired a total of 631 employees and lost a total of 555 employees; increasing our headcount to 544 employees out of a target of 650. Our goal, for 2024, is to minimize employee resignations and increase our headcount to 800 employees. The most efficient way to accomplish this is by determining why employees are choosing to leave our company and developing a plan to address such reason. 2. What is it that you need to do, better or for the first time? Describe your goal(s) for analyzing data. The objective, for 2024, is to mitigate attrition. To do this, we will break down 2023’s attrition data, by quarters, and determine the main reason employes are resigning. Are employees leaving the company for better or higher paying jobs? Are employees leaving due to lack of growth opportunities? Is our leadership the reason? In addition, we should analyze data for trends. Were there months where attrition was drastically higher than others? What was the average tenure of the employees when resigning? Once these trends are understood, we can develop a plan to counteract the resignation reasons. 3. As you reflect on your business need for performing data analytics, consider how you will gather your data. Will you be collecting it yourself, such as via a new customer survey? Will someone else in your organization, such as the customer service or HR department, collect the data and deliver it to you? I will be responsible for pulling the report from our HRIS (HR Information System). 4. Now that you have identified your business need for analyzing your data, identify the main categories of data you expect to gather. For example, in terms of customer data, this might be: first and last name, street address, city, state/province, mailing code, © 2018 eCornell. All rights reserved. The categories needed will be: Employee ids (instead of names for confidentiality reasons) Start and end date (for tenure purposes and to identify months with highest attrition) Separation reason (to understand why our employees are leaving our company and develop a plan to improve in such area) 5. Describe your plans for making sure that the data you’re working with is accurate and up-to-date. How do you think you can best accomplish this? Which colleagues or departments will you need to collaborate with? To ensure the data is accurate and up to date, I will run an attrition report from our HRIS. I will take this a step further by spot checking the information against our “live” attrition tracker which we use to manually track our terminations and provide our leaders quick and easy visibility to the data. 6. Set a timeline for success: What do you plan to do in the next month? In the next three months?
