3 Silvia Diaz Services Development Olson-Browne Insurance February 4, 2021 Employee Learning Programs: Designing Innovative Solutions When the average company must replace an entry-level employee, the costs range from $15,000 to $25,000. Reducing these costs motivates firms to change their learning culture by providing training and development programs that appeal to employees, especially new hires. They can do so by creating the following types of advanced learning programs, which are proving to be attractive recruitment and retention tools. Microlearning – A microlearning program offers training in short, concentrated bursts, such as through videos that are four to seven minutes long. Blended learning – The blended learning approach combines on-demand electronic-learning (e- learning) courses with follow-up lectures and discussions in a traditional classroom or conference room setting. Mobile learning – Mobile learning, or m-learning, takes place on mobile electronic devices such as smartphones. Gamification – This approach uses the technique of playing games, especially electronic simulations, to train employee and increase information retention. Microlearning Although microlearning is a popular topic in training and development circles, the term is not well- defined. According to Roger Olson, CEO of Olson-Browne Insurance, “Microlearning means more than small. It’s also focused, offering the right amount of information necessary to help a learner achieve a specific, actionable objective. This makes microlearning in business contexts especially valuable.” Examples of microlearning in business are short scenario-based videos and online content with built-in reinforcements, such as those used by language-learning apps. Microlearning addresses the shrinking range of the human attention span. A recent study found that the typical office employee is interrupted, or switches tasks an average of every three minutes, reducing their attention accordingly. Blended Learning Blended learning also considers shortened attention spans by allowing learners to train at their own pace and convenience. Blended learning combines online media with traditional methods. After engaging in a short online training session, learners can collaborate with others in a group and benefit from the This file created specifically for Emma casia

4 feedback of instructors. One study found that blended learning helps to increase active involvement in learning, improves memory retention, and enhances the skill set of employees. Mobile Learning Mobile learning takes advantage of employee who are accustomed to accessing information on their phones. The medium demands short, focused content that sparks curiosity rather than in-depth exploration. Examples include very brief videos, charts, infographics, and surveys that provide interactive learning opportunities. Gamification Gamification has moved from the fringes of professional training to the mainstream. Using the features of games to foster friendly competition is an effective learning technique with built-in incentives. In the Spark human resources newsletter, Kathie Kelly notes that gamification encourages employee to “meet deadlines and pick up new skills while creating a stress-free social atmosphere.” Employees in professional positions increasingly demand access to high-quality, engaging information. Training and development departments can satisfy this demand through innovative advanced learning solutions. This file created specifically for Emma casia
