M5 Effective Training Essay Alexis Mandelka BUS 5720 Dr. Barrett July 9 th , 2023
Which of the Five Steps to Effective Training do you feel the most qualified to work on and why? Out of the five steps to effective training I feel as I am most qualified to work on conduct a needs assessment. Needs assessment is the first step in establishing training or development program, by identifying what should be accomplished, a needs assessment creates the foundation for effective training (Philips, 2021). There are three levels of needs assessment- organizational analysis, task analysis and person analysis. I believe I’m best with conducting a needs assessment due to always wanting to brainstorm on what kind of foundation a business should have, when starting a business, you want it to success and without a strong foundation, there is nothing to build off of. Organizational needs analysis identifies where an organization development or improvement opportunities exist (Philips, 2021). This analysis information can be collected from variety of sources strategic plans, performance appraisals, customer surveys, employee surveys, restructuring plans and efficiency measures. Which would be the hardest step for you to assist with in the workplace setting? Evaluating the training would be my hardest step in the workplace setting. I personally think this as I feel everyone does a great job unless it’s seriously noticeable that someone isn’t pulling their weight or struggling to understand the end goal. Training objectives inform the design of the training program, and that to me feels as I would just ramble and not really train when speaking. The training program developer, content, learning methods, materials and setting need to be identified and any instructors need to be identified and trained. I don’t think I’m a person to train someone, I feel as I don’t explain or have the patience to train an employee to get
them to the highest bar that’s needed. Will I train someone, yes, but the outcome may depend on how I feel as I did as a trainer. Did I explain correctly, or did I confuse them even more, did I tell them the fastest and simple way to find a document or did I make them take two steps more than needed. I question myself. Describe a Needs Assessment and how it is utilized. Needs assessment is the first step in establishing a training or development program. By identifying what should be accomplished, a needs assessment creates the foundation for effective training. The primary outcome of a training needs assessment is the set of training objectives identifying the ultimate goals of the training program (Philips, 2021). Needs assessments can address issues including performance, retention, business goals, and organizational change (Philips, 2021). Person needs analysis evaluates how individual employees are doing in the training topic and determine who needs what type of training. Person level needs analysis information can be collected from sources including: • Performance appraisals • Customer surveys • Individual assessments • Performance issues • Skill inventories (Philips, 2021). It is important to remember that training is not always the best solution to an identified need— sometimes redesigning the job, providing better resources, or implementing staffing, performance management, or compensation solutions are more appropriate (Philips, 2021). How long do you think a Needs Assessment has to be in order to be effective? I believe a needs assessment should be done at every stage of the learning process, which can be a month or two. It should be fairly frequent. It’s important to remember to define the goals for the assessment, articulate the purpose of the assessment, identify the target populations for the

assessment of needs and services, determine how data will be collected and used. The time line for the process I believe is on how involve your employees are.
