Media HR Issues Essay Alexis Mandelka BUS 5720 Dr. Barrett August 1, 2023
Social media is websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking, which the first media site was born in 1997 (Samur, 2018). SixDegrees.com was the first true media site, you could set up a profile page, create lists of connections and send messages within networks (Samur, 2018). The site amasses around one million users before being bought, only to discontinue in 2000 (Samur, 2018). 4.8 billion social media users worldwide, representing 59.9% of the global population and 92.7% of all internet users (Nyst, 2023). There was an increase of 150 million new social media users within a year, which is a 3.2% increase year over year (Nyst, 2023). Social media is a blessing and a curse, is it truly helpful or does it cause more harm than good? First issue is when employees are talking badly about their employer on social media. This is a common issue that HR faces, it is a personal way of coping or just keeping in touch, but it is inappropriate to speak negatively about your employer on your platform (McLaughlin, n.d.). Talking badly about your employer can cause reputation damage, word of mouth can be a very dangerous game. If caught bad mouth a company it can cause a negatively affect to the reputation and employee brand (McLaughlin, n.d.). Ultimately, if you speak ill of your company on Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms you could be fired. These are just some of risks associated with bad mouthing coworkers or your employer on social media. Social media causes issues when a employee is posting content of themselves socializing or enjoying a vacation when they are on sick leave (McLaughlin, n.d.). As HR the first step is not to jump to conclusions but to speak to the employee and learn more about the situation. When someone calls in it truly is there only personal time to take, but it’s hard to obey if they are posting doing something fun instead of really at home ill with back pain or a cold. You can be fired for any kind of post, even from your own equipment (McLaughlin, n.d.).
Bullying and discrimination, employer do not have the right to constantly monitor private social media accounts (McLaughlin, n.d.). Any discrimination or bulling should be taken seriously. Social media bullying or discrimination against anyone should be a severe issue, whether outside or inside work, employees are expected to uphold organizations reputation (McLaughlin, n.d.). An example is when Roseanne Barr had just seen the reboot of her Roseanne show enjoy huge success in 2018, when she made a racist comment on social media and the entire show was cancelled (McLaughlin, n.d.).
