SHIPPING ERRORS IN SHORT SHIPMENTS
2
Abstract
One of the most common problems in shipping are the incorrect labeling of merchandise,
shipment of the wrong merchandise, and under- or over shipment of merchandise. Under- and
over shipments usually are caused by live loading product. Although an organization may be
equipped with the best scanning systems, even those systems sometimes cannot prevent an
individual from placing an incorrect container on a truck or placing the incorrect label on a
container. This research paper will explain how labeling products incorrectly can be stopped, and
the best way to minimize shipping errors. Strengthening shipping errors in short shipments is one
of the major possible strategy solutions to some of these problems and challenges faced by
transportation companies and industries. This research paper, therefore, seeks to discuss analyze
in deep the shipping errors in short shipments.

Discuss Shipping Errors in Short Shipments
When it comes to shipping errors in short shipments , the best practice to approach these
problems is to scan and label the containers at the entry point on the trailer (McDonald, 2009).
The process takes time and is not cost-effective, but it will help in reducing those errors. Short
shipments occur when a cargo appears on the shipping list but is not included in shipments or
received by the recipient or when the amount or item received is less than the amount or the item
listed (
Sun, X., Chung, S. H., Choi, T. M., Sheu, J. B., & Ma, H. L., 2020). Over- shipments
occur when the amount or quantity received is more than the amount or quantity listed. Both
under shipments and over-shipments are caused by several causes, and both over-shipments and
under- shipments are termed as shipping incorrectly. “In logistics, short shipments happens when
the cargo onboard listed on the shipment manifest does not equate to actual cargo on board” (
Sun
et al., 2020, p.1). The cargo onboard listed is either more or less than the cargo on the manifest.
This is a sign that various cargo containers are short shipped on board. Various factors can cause
shipping errors or mistakes, and this research is a full analysis and discussion of shipping errors
or mistakes in short shipments.
Shipping Errors in Short Shipments
Cargo transportation is part of daily based activities for many industrial sectors and
companies globally, and systems to maximize time and cost efficiency may be surprisingly detail
oriented (
Hillbrand, C., & Schoech, R., 2007). When cargo transportation is an everyday routine
operation, proper execution is mandatory. Shipping plays a vital role in online businesses.
However, shipping is all about delivering items to buyers and shows the involved industries and
companies' commitment to providing the best and excellent overall experiences for its
clients/buyers or customers (
Hillbrand, C., & Schoech, R., 2007). Avoiding shipping mistakes

and errors promotes and places the individual industries or companies ahead in global business
competitions. The following are some of the common shipping errors in short shipments.
Improper Packing
Improperly packaged cargo results in a high chance of shipment damage. Carriers have
begun declining various damage-based claims due to improper packaging (
Hillbrand, C., &
Schoech, R., 2007). This is one of the most common errors or mistakes in short shipment. Online
companies and stores sell various products that are different in terms of shapes and sizes.
Regardless of the type or size of the product, various products require different packing.
Managers and business owners require specifying which type of products needs a specific box
together with protective-based cushioning. If the container is not properly and adequately
reinforced, it might not withstand the product's weight placed inside the box. This may result in
damage and breakages of items that are packed in such boxes or containers.
If the quantity is not properly packed, there is the probability of damaging the poorly
packed items in transit. Buyers and customers are not responsible for any damage that may occur
in shipping (
Hillbrand, C., & Schoech, R., 2007). The online store or shipping carrier, in this
case, is responsible for any damage that might occur in the process of shipping the products.
Since any business's main goal is to maximize the profits and minimize the cost as much as
possible, replacing the damaged items becomes more expensive. All the companies and
industries involved in shipping do not want to incur the costs.
Therefore, in packaging your items, it is advisable to consult experienced professionals to
avoid the cost incurred in replacing damaged products due to improper packing. Besides this,
having reinforced containers and boxes for a particular item and ensuring proper protective

cushioning in the containers and boxes to avoid breakages and other forms of damage to the
items while in transit.
Incorrect Shipping Address
Incorrect shipping address is among the most common shipping errors.
If the companies
and stores involved in shipping services do not take time to check and confirm the destination
and delivery addresses on the bill of lading, cargo or items might wind up to destinations where
it does not belong.
From the online stores' and business owner’s point of view, both correct
shipping address proper packaging of products and items is crucial to avoid delivery items to the
wrong destinations and damaging items while in delivery. However, these are easy to identify;
small alteration in the ZIP codes, state, or destination codes, among other errors may have a
devastating effect on the business.
In case this happens, getting back the item delivered to the wrong destination and then
delivering the item to the right destination or buyer is costly, which these online-based
businesses do not want to incur. This also results in delays in product delivery.
Besides, this may
demotivate the customers and shift to more reliable and efficient online-based stores and
companies. Therefore, it is advisable and better to check and confirm details such as ZIP codes
and addresses to avoid incurring the high costs of getting back the items and reshipping them
again to the right person and destination.
Inaccurate Weight of The Shipment
Some companies may not have the proper equipment to take the cargo's weight, resulting
in estimated weights. Carriers have certified scales at their terminals, and automatically they will
re-weigh cargo and charge a fee to the bill if the original weight is not correct. Re-weighing fees
result to extract cost incurred by the involved companies or stores which do not weigh their

cargo keenly and correctly. Some online business owners estimate cargo's weight to some
decimal places, but these are common mistakes committed by online-based business owners. If
the weight of cargo from the owner and the weight obtained from the same cargo by shipping
carriers and if there is variation between the original weight from the owner and carrier weight,
they will charge extra costs.
Therefore, it is advisable to weigh and indicate the exact weight of cargo before and after
packaging. Therefore, the online-based business owners need to consult the shipping carriers on
the equipment and methods to take the cargo's weight based on the shipping carrier’s criteria for
recording cargo weight.
Not Automating the Shipping Process.
This is another error that online-based business owners commit currently, various
platforms aid online-based shipping processes. For instance, for WordPress-based websites, there
are tons of plugins that may automate shipment and packaging. Applying these plugins, you may
get shipping-based labels which you can access online from the back office store
("Amazon.in
Help: FAQs", 2021).
Insufficient Shipping Options For The Customers
Sometimes, online-based business owners may decide to provide cheaper or free shipping
services to customers. Free or cheaper shipping options are not the best shipping choices. Various
buyers may consider other points over the cost; that is, the customer may opt to pay even extra
cost to get the shipment quickly or faster (
Sun et al.
,
2020). Relatively short delivery period,
package confidentiality and security, characteristics such as guaranteed delivery, among others,
are factors customers or buyers may consider over free or cheaper shipping.
Therefore, online-

based business owners should be flexible when providing shipping services and alternatives to
their clients or customers (
Hillbrand, C., & Schoech, R., 2007). The online business owner needs
to identify some of the customers' points and provide and develop shipping choices based on
these points is the best strategy.
Only One Shipping Carrier For All Shipments
Some shippers depend on only one carrier for their transportation purposes due to the
excellent services they offer. Most online-based business owners prefer to work with such kinds
of shipping carriers (
Grünert, T., & Sebastian, H. J., 2000). Although it is understandable to
create long trusting relationships, depending on only one carrier for all your shipping can cost
you a hard time (
Sun et al., 2020). For instance, if the carrier downsizes its facility or
experiences a strike, this may cause a lot of fright accumulation or pile up. Nobody is in a
position to move it. It is therefore advisable to create contacts with various carriers to enjoy
competitive rates and more flexible operations. Working in multi-carrier-based shipping, online-
based business owners have the options to select the shipping carriers that suit their desire and
needs effectively and efficiently. This flexibility to select particular shipping carriers is based on
scale capacity, the area covered by the shipping carrier, and expertise. Applying tools such as the
WooCommerce multi-carrier shipping plugin for WordPress-based online store business owners
will be beneficial (
Grünert, T., & Sebastian, H. J., 2000). This way, they can simultaneously
access shipping carriers such as USPS, UPS, DHL, and others.
Not Maintaining Delivery Receipts
Damage to an item during shipping is responsible to buyers. In such circumstances, there
is a need to develop and implement online-based business owners' mechanisms to ensure that

done during the shipping process and not in the product's packaging. The consignee needs to
inspect the freight they normally receive, noting abnormalities before signing the delivery receipt
(
Sun
et al.
,
2020). In case there is the omission of damages on delivery receipts, it will be tough
to retrieve and recover the costs based on the damage claim.
Shippers and carrier owners can
point to a clean delivery receipt and claim any damage that must have occurred after delivery. If
you are in doubt, point out that there are possible damages pending inspection. Having delivery
receipts in each step help to identify the specific phase or level of the product's damage.
Transparent And Visible Return Policy
Sometimes, customers turn to check out the terms and conditions to return the item in
case of damage and malfunctioning. Before purchasing the product, the customer/buyer wants to
know the procedure for returning, for instance, a TV, and purchase a new version, if the business
owner has the new version of some item (TV). Not having clear and transparent based and easy
methods and procedures to access return policy is another common shipping mistake online
based online business owner’s commit. Therefore, the need for transparency is vital in returning
policy, showing what damages will be covered, among other details (
Sun et al., 2020). Online
business owners should provide printable return shipping details and procedures to their
customers. “For instance, some of the most successful online-based stores, like Amazon, have a
buyer-centric strategy in return policy”
("Amazon. in Help: FAQs", 2021, p.1). Return policy
needs to be easy, understandable, and clearly visible to the customer simultaneously. An invisible
return policy to the customers in buying an item is not applicable in the long term.
Conclusion
SHIPPING ERRORS IN SHORT SHIPMENTS
9
This research paper deals with one of the crucial characteristics of online-based
businesses- shipping. The paper is about how crucial shipping is in the current E-commerce
sector and the shipping errors these online-based business owners commit. In the current errors
discussed above, a shipping error can be the cause of all failures of a particular online business.
By looking at this research paper, you can conclude that the best approach to prevent shipping
errors is to issue the labels with each shipment, ensure the load is staged, make sure the labels are
applied, and then validate that the merchandise to be shipped is accurate to the pick list
(McDonald, 2009). Another thing is reaching out to customers to inform them of the short
shipments to get a rapid status impact on their production requirements (McDonald, 2009). By
avoiding all the above-discussed shipping errors, online business success and progress go hand in
hand with customer-based satisfaction.
