Kai Thng 8/25/23 Business For the Glory of God by Wayne Grudem Part 1 1. I really enjoyed the way Wayne Grudem introduced this book by capturing the fact that business is often viewed in a negative connotation by using common buzz words such as “profit”, “competition”, and “money”. In today’s culture, these words have a slimy cutthroat feel to them and seem fueled by greed and selfishness. I think that its great that the first thing that he does is acknowledge that this idea is not completely unfounded as several recent scandals have made a lot of elements in business seem inherently evil. Business and elements are a tool that can be used for both good and evil and is important to realize how to utilize it correctly. 2. Another important concept is the fact that Wayne mentions that glorifying God may sound like it belongs in a church through activities like singing, praying, or moral living, but it can and should encompass much more than this. Wayne seeks to show how business itself can be used as a great way to glorify God through all aspects of business activity. Glorifying God should not be just a task done in the vacuum of the church, but rather should be taken with believers wherever they go and this includes business., 3. Ownership is something that many people are divided on as to whether it is a good or evil thing in this world. Some people believe that life would be so much simpler and more peaceful if no one had their own things and everything was had in common. However, it is important to realize that the Bible does support the idea of personal ownership and I think that it is interesting that a way that this can be seen is in God’s command, “You shall not steal”, which shows that someone must have personal
Kai Thng 8/25/23 ownership in order for something to be stolen. I think an important concept on ownership is that ownership should be done with a sense of gratitude and responsibility knowing that we are really stewards of what God has entrusted us with. 4. I really like how Wayne constantly brings up the idea that we should be imitators of God in all that we do. This flows down in a number of ways and the first and most obvious way is in how we love others as God first loved us. In regard to ownership, God desires for us to be good stewards of the things we own and, in this way, imitate his sovereignty over all. One very important way Christians can do this is realizing that the goal of ownership is not to hoard but to bless others in the same way that God has blessed us. 5. One analogy that I loved from the chapter was in a practical way that Christians can put their trust in God. Wayne talks about the idea of giving away $100. He states that when a person does this the person is essential saying, “God, I am trusting you to provide for $100 of my future needs, because I no longer can depend on this $100.” I think this is a great attitude to have because it takes because it puts the focus of giving on God and not ourselves. In this way, Christians can acknowledge that God is their sustainer instead of them being the focus of their own giving and comfort. 6. Many times, in life, the question of why a person would want to work hard if they are getting paid the same no matter their level of effort. In response to this, productivity is a virtue that God instilled in humans starting in the garden of Eden. This can be seen in God telling Adam and Eve to both subdue and have dominion over the earth. In this way when humans productively create and produce things on earth they can glorify God in their productivity.

Instead of being resentful of this fact, this is an opportunity to engage in productive work that will glorify Him. By engaging in product work, we are also imitating God, who works and cooperates with Himself as the trinity through perfect interdependence, cooperation, and hard work to accomplish His work on earth. One way our work can be used to glorify God is to shine a light in the way we go about our work with joy and vigor not for our own self gain, but to glorify God and serve others. 8. What would happen if humans decided not to be productive? This is when sin would begin to creep in and the earth and man would suffer the consequences. Things like war and pollution are examples of humans neglecting to be good stewards and productive subdues of the earth. Instead, they contribute to causing pain and suffering that came into earth as a result of sin. 9. Employment is something that can be viewed as something evil and vile as people complain about being subject to another person’s control and orders. However, the Bible does no condemn employment and rather Jesus states that the laborer deserves his wages in Luke 10:7. Employment is a way for greater productivity to be achieved and is necessary in many industries on earth. It is a way to glorify God in working well for whoever we happen to be working for. 10. Finally, I think that it is very important that Wayne emphasizes the fact that being an employer or employee can be used to glorify God. We can glorify God in the way we properly use authority and exercise it as employers. As employees, we can work
