There are many Pros and Cons of police investigations relying on paid informants because some don’t have anything to lose but others may depend on something in return for helping the law. Some pros would be : informants receiving immunity, protection from different agencies, or financial rewards. A few cons would be : legal risks or even retaliation. Since me or a family member has never experienced “code of silence” by officers, i went ahead and looked into the 2018 case of Laquan McDonald, who was shot by a Chicago PD officer and 2 PD workers helped cover it up. I feel as if “code of silence” influences public opinion of police officers in a negative way because with this tactic, how can the public ever fully trust PD to keep them out of harms way or safe? Such “loyalty” isn’t really beneficial in the long run and it most definitely, isn’t necessary. I agree that the "code of silence" can impact the public's view on the police because it decreases the amount of trust they put into officials. I admire you saying that loyalty is not necessary worth it, and I fully agree. I believe that this job is incredibly important and deals with many crucial situations that may even sacrifice a life. I think the truth is important when it comes to a job as important as the police's. I understand that ensuring loyalty between officers is important, but there should be a line that they shouldn't cross. Public opinion toward police is negative because of this issue and in order to gain that trust back, police should improve their tactics. Lara Gonzalez Lara Gonzalez Sep 19, 2023Sep 19 at 5:03pm
Manage Discussion Entry Hi Samantha! I enjoyed reading your thoughts on the topic. I also read about the Laquan McDonald case, in which the 'code of silence' was through the other cops hiding the truth of what occurred at the scene. The officer shot at him 16 times, and ended up killing him yet the others did not tell the full truth. I agree on questioning whether the public can fully trust the PD after hearing about the code of silence cases. Such tragedy as you mentioned can be seen as an act by the law enforcement against the community and lack of trust continues to grow.
