BM1005 Assessment
BM1005 – Assessment: As mentioned during week 1, there is one assessment that requires completion for this module. The assessment must be completed and submitted and the overall module passed in order to progress from the module. Assessment is your opportunity to showcase your understanding of the topic and present your research and findings within a specific area. Whilst the thought of assessment can be daunting, there is plenty of support in place and we will look at this over the course of the seminar. Always remember that assessment is not there to trick you. Module teams will be quite explicit about what they are looking for and will offer the necessary guidance to help you get there…….. Remember to ask as many questions as you need to help with your understanding.

BM1005 – Assessment: The assessment will measure all learning outcomes associated with the module. Remember that learning outcomes are what you need to demonstrate in order to pass a module. You do this by completing and passing the assessment – the assessment measures the learning outcomes. Module Learning Outcomes are: 1. Explain some of the contemporary issues within the landscape of business 2. Recognise the impact of the current business landscape on organisations 3. Apply appropriate theory and concepts within specific organizational contexts 4. Describe and defend why a particular aspect is impacting on business in a more significant way than others
BM1005 – Assessment 1: Landscape Blog (100%) Illustrate your understanding of the business landscape by producing a blog of 2000 words (+/- 10%) that discusses the main issue that you believe is currently impacting on organisations within the marketing, consumer, people, economic and operational landscape. Within each section, discuss how these main issue are impacting on organisations and provide a supporting rationale as to why you believe this to be the case. This is how much the assessment is worth to the overall module grade Key Point!
BM1005 – Assessment: In effect then, you are being asked to write a summary blog on each aspect of the business landscape. This means, you will have a blog on each of the 5 landscape areas and within each section, you will be summarising back the main issue that you believe is impacting the most on organisations. The main issues will have been identified as part of the lectures and workshops (it’ll be up to you argue which is most important) and will be supplemented by additional research. You will also be expected to discuss HOW this issue is impacting on organisation – this will come via the use of relevant examples.

BM1005 – Assessment Criteria: Assessment criteria is what you have to demonstrate in order to pass the assessment. The strength at which you demonstrate will dictate the overall mark that you will receive for the assessment. Assessment criteria is what your workshop tutor will mark you on – nothing else. For this assessment, there are 3 areas that we will be marking you on: 1/ Presentation of Blog 2/ Application and Understanding 3/ Organisational Impact Lets explore these in more detail.
BM1005 – Assessment Criteria: Presentation of Blog (10%) Produce a Blog using the template provided, ensuring that all sections are completed. Clearly referenced using Harvard standards with a references list. Application and Understanding (50%) Use of reliable theory (from texts, journal, and reliable news) to support understanding of the contemporary issues within the landscape of business. Theory will have been used to explain some of the contemporary issues with the business landscape and to support the rationale provided by the student. Organisational impact (40%) Use of reliable theory (from texts, journals and reliable news) along with business led examples to support with recognition of the impact of the current business landscape on organisations.

BM1005 – Assessment Support: Over the coming weeks, there are a number of ways in which you can gain the necessary information and support required for assessment completion. Module attendance is key – we will be discussing the key issues in each landscape area within the workshops. Interacting and engaging with both the workshops and the pre-recorded lecture will elevate your chances of success with the assessment. BM1005 – Formative Feedback: From week commencing 30 th October (and subsequent weeks), within your allocated seminar session, you will be able to gain formative feedback on the work you have completed on your assessment to date. The formative feedback sessions will take place on w/c 30 th October, 13 th November, 27 th November, 11 th December and, 8 th January – that’s 5 separate opportunities to gain feedback. For the first formative feedback opportunity, your workshop tutors will invite you all to an appointment where you can show them the work completed on the marketing landscape blog section. Mitigating Circumstances
What are Mitigating Circumstances? The University defines mitigating circumstances as ‘unforeseeable or unpreventable circumstances that may have a significant adverse effect on the academic performance of a student’. If you find yourself in this situation you may be eligible for special consideration when it comes to assessments or exams, under our Mitigating Circumstances policy. If your claim is accepted, you will be given an extension on your assessment due date or defer your exam date to the next assessment period. You may also be offered further support depending on the type of issue or incident.

Mitigating Circumstances: Am I eligible? To be eligible your case must meet the following five criteria: 1.You must usually submit the request BEFORE the submission date. Mitigating Circumstances cannot usually be granted retrospectively, so it is important to put in a claim as soon as you possibly can. However, there are a small number of circumstances where retrospective submissions may be considered, such as an unexpected hospital stay. 2.Until you receive an outcome of your MC you must work towards the original deadline. 3.Circumstances should be accompanied by appropriate documentary evidence. 4.For a claim to be accepted, the student must be able to demonstrate that mitigating circumstances are ALL of the following:
4.(cont) There must be a clear adverse effect on your academic performance, which may take several forms: You will be unable to submit work by a deadline or attend a scheduled test, examination, or practical activity. The event or circumstance will cause you to underperform in an assessment, either in the preparation for the assessment, or on the day 5. The circumstances for your request must be accepted. The lists below do not cover everything but give you an idea of what usually would and wouldn’t be considered.
Mitigating Circumstances: Examples of circumstances that would normally be included: The death of someone you are close to e.g., parent, grandparent, guardian, partner, sibling, child. Serious personal illness or personal injury, or a significant change or deterioration in a long-term condition. Victim of crime (usually with police crime number or supporting evidence from a university member of staff/professional person to whom the student has confided). Jury service. Involvement in a criminal case/witness. Failure in the provision of reasonable adjustments, or failure in, or inaccessibility of, School provided equipment.

Mitigating Circumstances – what do I need to do? 1. Seek advice first – speak to your course leader/personal tutor or module leader if you think you are going to struggle to make the deadlines that have been set and if you believe you have mitigating circumstances. 2. Submit a claim using MYUCLan – this can be found on the studenthub . 3. Once submitted, the claim will be reviewed by the team in academic registry within 2 working days. 4. The panel will make a decision and either a/ reject the application , b/ grant a short term extension or c/ refer you to your course team for further discussion and a longer term extension. 5. Remember to always submit a claim ahead of the deadline date. 6. If your application is refused, you must complete the assessment as normal and to the original deadlines.

Assessment Planning: Individual Task: Working individually, list how you intend to approach this assessment – what steps will you take? Think about what you will do first, how you will approach the research?, how you will use the feedback opportunities? and how you will plan to complete the assessment in a timely manner? Would you benefit from skills led resources before you start? Think back to last week – are there any resources/support systems that could help you?

Assessment Planning: If you found that difficult (it’s natural to), you may want to consider study skills led resources to support you. Cottrell discusses a 7 point procedure for writing assignments that could support until you develop your own method for completing assessments (2013:282) . The 7 points highlighted are: 1. Clarify the task 2. Collect and record information 3. Organise and plan 4. Engage, reflect, evaluate 5. Write an outline plan and first draft 6. Work on your first draft 7. Final draft
