Description The second part of this assignment asks you to prepare your cover letter and resume using the same job posting and incorporating the key elements for both documents. Rationale Your polished cover letter and resume will serve to market your skills to employers. This assignment will evaluate the following course learning outcome: 4. Create properly formatted and grammatically correct self-marketing documents (cover letters, resumes, etc.) that can be tailored to specific job opportunities. How Your Assignment Will be Graded A rubric has been created and can be found attached to the submission folder. Submission folders can be accessed by selecting Course Tools and then Assignments on the course navigation bar. Late Policy - The School of Interdisciplinary Studies Late Policy states that you will be deducted 10% per day for each day your assignment is late. After 7 days, you will be assigned a 0% for the assignment. See the School of Interdisciplinary Studies Late Policy for further guidelines. For Assignments including Cover Letters and Resume - Use of any form of generative artificial intelligence (AI) is strictly forbidden throughout all stages of this assessment, including brainstorming, idea generation, outline formation, etc. This includes your cover letter and resume. Generative AI may include (but is not limited to) chatbots, coding tools and image/art generating tools, or other technologies that produce work for you. Using AI in any capacity throughout the assessment process will be in violation of Conestoga’s Academic Offences policy under the category of Unauthorized Aids and Assistance (Cheating) or Copying from Others or Self Copying. The consequence of this violation is that an academic offence will be filed, with the severity of the penalty dependent on previous offences. In cases where you are unsure if something is considered generative AI, always ask your professor before using. M ODULE 8: M Y S TRATEGIC R ESUME In module 8, the emphasis was on writing a strategic resume that was tailored to a specific job opportunity. Now that you are writing your resume, consider the type of resume you will be using and the components that should be included to target the job posting. 1. Reverse chronological Resume 2. Functional Resume 3. Combination Resume M ODULE 9: C RAFTING A POWERFUL C OVER L ETTER In module 9 you explored the power of cover letters. Cover letters give employers insight into what you might be like as a future employee. A powerful cover letter will communicate your value proposition in a consistent and compelling way, by focusing attention on your key strengths. List of Activities P ART T WO D IRECTIONS –S UBMIT TO THE A SSIGNMENT F OLDER Follow these instructions to submit your marketing materials to the Assignment Submission Folder. All of your materials must be submitted in a single word document . 1. Copy and paste the same job posting into the word document. 2. On a new page in the same word document, write the cover letter, tailored to the job posting.
3. On a new page in the same document, write the resume, tailored to the job posting. The resume should be 1-2 pages. o Incorporate information from the profile paragraph used in assignment 1. o Include the accomplishment statements and key words used in part 1 of assignment 2. 4. Before submission, please review the below cover letter and resume checklists, to ensure all requirements are met. 5. Name the document using the following convention: last name, first name, cover letter and resume. E.g., Smith, John Cover Letter and Resume. C OVER L ETTER AND R ESUME C HECKLISTS – P LEASE ENSURE THAT YOU MEET ALL REQUIREMENTS FOR THE COVER LETTER AND RESUME Suggestion - Place a check mark in the table to indicate that each requirement has been met. The cover letter and resume checklists do not need to be submitted with the assignment. It is provided to ensure you have included all the key elements in your marketing documents. Cover Letter Checklist Requirements Checkmark Header with your contact details Current date Employer’s name, position title, and mailing address Subject line (use the word “Regarding”) – Job title and competition number (if available). Professional opening greeting Paragraph 1 – Includes the position name and why you are a good fit for the company culture . Paragraph 2 – Includes a clear connection between the job posting requirements and the skills, experience, and academic qualifications that you bring to the position. Include bullet points – Review the example of a cover letter to see the placement. Paragraph 3 (last paragraph) – Thank the reader for their time and consideration and indicate a clear interest in next steps. Add contact details again in this paragraph.
