2 Journal 1 Question 1 1a. Supervisor Traits For my journal, I will be reflecting on my experiences in my role as the Director of Development for This is Living Ministries, Inc., a 501c3 faith-based nonprofit recovery ministry under the leadership of executive director Lindsay Holloway that brings adult women out of prison and gives them the tools necessary to find freedom and break the cycle of recidivism. While I can say that I see all of the listed major leadership traits in Lindsay, I will speak on the top three I observe consistently—determination, self-confidence, and integrity. Lindsay, like myself, came from a past of trauma, abuse, and addiction. The fact that she conquered this past and broke free is enough to show the trait of determination, but what takes it one step further is the fact that in her becoming free from these strongholds, Lindsay was given a vision by the Lord to help other people break free just as she did. Having no experience in nonprofit leadership or understanding of how to proceed, Lindsay’s drive and tenacity to carry out this vision were evidenced in the fact that she consistently sought out mentors. One day, she came across a man named Raul Lopez, executive director of a men’s ministry called Men of Valor. Raul would take her on as a mentee and our ministry that now helps so many people was born. When it came time to do the hard work and to learn, Lindsay had the self-confidence to understand that if God gave her the vision, He had put into her what she needed to carry it out. It
3 was this trait of self-confidence along with her drive and determination that would not allow her to give up. She had the vision, and it would come to pass one way or another. In nonprofit executive leadership, integrity must be a core value. I have seen Lindsay exhibit integrity in every aspect of her leadership. This is evidenced by the fact that she chooses to carry out that which she says she will do, she adds extra layers of accountability to her role as executive director on top of the standard board governance procedures, and she does everything in her power to make sure that these women are loved and taken care of not only while in our charge, but after graduation. 1b. Assigned or Emergent Power When asked whether or not my executive director has assigned or emergent power or both, I would have to say that is a mix of both. The reason I say this is because there is a certain amount of authority that is derived from her position as the executive director, but the majority of her leadership or influence within the organization is a result of emergent power. 4 heart, and she has developed a referent power base by earning the trust of those in her charge and those in her sphere. If we want to tie this in with what we have learned and look back to the leadership traits, we can see that her integrity and determination were force multipliers in her ability to earn that referent trust. Her influence is a function of her integrity and how she treats people more than it is in her role as executive director. To back my reason for saying that it is both would be that some people in organizations are a bit hardheaded sometimes on certain matters, so when she has to make a call they don’t agree with sometimes it comes down to her having to use her assigned power to say, “this is the way it is going to be.” Also, full disclosure, that hardheaded person is usually me. Question 2 2a. My Reflection This is my final semester in the MPS program. For whatever reason, my advisor chose this to be my second to last class rather than one of my first ones, so my aha moments have been throughout the duration of my program. To reflect on what I got from this assignment and this module as a whole, I would say that it reinforced my understanding that leadership is applied influence, and while certain traits do give us a higher propensity toward leading more effectively, there is no perfect skillset, and leadership all boils down to how we choose to use that influence. As I stated in discussion two this week, there is no perfect skillset associated with effective leadership, and even if it was, it wouldn’t matter if the person possessing it didn’t put forth the effort to use it. That said, I learned that I made an awesome decision in choosing this program. I am grateful for the opportunity to be here, and I am grateful that the Lord delivered me from addiction and my past because I have been given the tools to become an exceptional leader, and now I intend to use this influence to help thousands of people to break free.
